Oil pump leak

I got a leak from the bottom of my oil pump. It's from theelbow fitting that attachs to the line to the oil filter. Since there isn't much room to work between the oil pump and the frame I'm thinking I may have to remove the pump just to get to this fitting. I figure the fitting needs removed, teflon taped and reinstalled. Does this sound right? Anyone know if the fitting will be able to be unthreaded out of the pump while it's still attached? I've never pulled off an oil pump before so I'm not sure what I'll run into with gaskets, shafts, etc. Is it an easy job? My bike is an '09 Mastiff and it is under warranty but my dealer is about 3 hours away and I don't have the time to get it there. Plus the bike is pissing oil on my garage floor.

If I'm not mistakin you may need to pull the cam cover to get the oil pump off. I'd try to fix in place before you do that. Do you have a authorized service center that may be closer to you than the dealer?

No service center close by. They are all about 3-4 hours away from me. I may just have to try to get it out while it's attached. I'm afraid that once it starts unthreading that the bottom of the elbow will be against the cross memeber of the frame and the elbow won't be able to come out. Not sure how much threads go into the oil pump but there is only about 1/4 inch of clearance for the elbow to drop out. I thought I had the leak after I tightened up the line some more but it kept leaking and then I discovered the elbow is leaking.

You talking about the elbow shown here coming out the bottom of the oil pump?



I dont think its the elbow coming out the back?

Last thing I would do is pull the oil pump. Too many gears in there to mess with. Get it up on a lift and as best you can get the oil line off then you can remove the elbow and apply new sealant. Either the goop stuff or some teflon tape. Make sure it's not the oil line hose though, BDM had a bad batch of hoses back in those days as I've experienced first hand.

Gas Man - Yes, it's the elbow coming out the bottom like in the first picture. I'm doubting that I will have room to drop it out between the pump and the frame to apply new sealant and reinstall. This is on an '09 Mastiff.

Raywood - I was thinking the same about the gears and such. I was hoping someone could tell me for sure if the elbow can come out and clear the frame. Didn't want to loosen it all up and not get it out and then have it leak even more.

Is it a multiple piece like mine?

I think that if you break it down it should swing around.

Mine is not a two piece one like yours. It is just an elbow threaded into the pump and the other end connected to the compression fitting on the oil line. When I tightened the oil line fitting the pressure from the wrench made the elbow move very easily. I'm thinking that the damn elbow was never even tightened up enough from the factory. But my concern is that the elbow will not have enough clearance to come out between the pump and the frame that is right below the elbow. I got a chrome issue with my rear wheel and pulley so I may just tell the dealer to come get my bike and fix everything at one time. He has the claim in to BD and just waiting on a new wheel and pulley. The weather here in PA has been sucking so I'm not riding now anyways. :down:

FUCK this. If its a 2009 make them fix it! Its a bdm problem under warrenty.

I checked out this leaking fitting and didn't think I would be able to take it out and be able to clear the frame. So I cleane off all the oil with brake cleaner and began to tighten it. It is a bitch to try and turn it since there is no clearance for a wrench but I did manage to get it turned a full two turns. Fired up the bike and idled it for a few minutes and no leak. Haven't had time or a nice day to take it out for a ride to make sure the leak is gone but I'm thinking the fitting was never fully threaded in so it caused the leak.

Yeah if you tightened it then you can take it out and dope it if needed. But I dont think there is any need with farreled ends
