M/C UP

Energy One
Well the bike is running! just a little harder to start. This morning while leaving for work it coughs and backfires before it starts, looks like some smoke was coming from the carb. Not sure if this is anything to worry about it fires up just need to open the throttle and hit the start button.
thanks again to all who helped get the bike up and running.

hey paul, dont open the throttle when you hit the start button.thats probably your smoke from the carb and backfire.you should only twist the throttle grip twice before hitting start button.this should be all you need to start the bike.mobsta

Mobsta, If I don't open the throttle the bike will not start. It has really been giving me problems starting. I can usually crank it up after a few tries but it coughs and backfires before it starts. not sure what is causing it but I am going to take the air filter off and fire it up just to see if there is anything going on.

paul, twisting the grip twice should give you enough fuel to start the bike.however you may still need some carb adjustment.someone else may chime in here about opening throttle during start up.goodluck:)

paul, opening the throttle will increase compression and make it harder to start and also put more strain on your starter.just something to think about.mobsta

I pulled the air filter and the damn thing cranks right up time to change the old filter. started up without using the throttle. will look into the carb adjustment thread a little more should not be too much of an issue.

mobsta is right....just a couple twist of the throttle is all you need.
what do the plugs look like...and have you pulled off your air cleaner to see if it's squirting?

bill

bill, I will check the plugs, I just put new ones in. the air filter squirting?? I am going to clean up the air filter and talking to the wife to convince her that I need a new D& M twister air filter and all my problems with the bike will be solved.

paul,i am still kinda wondering whats happening here.you said your bike ran fine before all the trouble started.why is the air cleaner now the problem?this makes no sense to me only because in ran fine before all these problems.just sayin.it might be the filter.do a search on filters before you purchase another style filter.:)

okay lets put this one to sleep. I did some reading on the forum and heard some things about the blowback. I went out and adjusted the hose that seats on the back of the filter bracket. The bike is starting up real easy 2 throttle twist and hit start fires up 1st try. Not sure if that was the problem but I am confident now no problems. Been riding the bike back and forth to work and no coughing while starting no backfires. Many Thanks again. TIME TO RIDE!!!

D&M spike filters are bad, do something else.
whats wrong with the D & M? Shitty performance?
Not "ALL" D&M products (spikes) are the issue. But some have air flow restriction with the "single" spikes. To check for air flow restriction, warm engine to normal operating temp., check idle speed RPMs, then remove spike & filter. If idle speed RPMs decrease, the air flow is being restricted, producing a choking effect.
I prefer the dual spike myself for these big inch motors. But as BadBrad mentioned, they are a bit pricey! But they do work just fine in every aspect. :2thumbs:

hope this helps!

Thanks, i really like the D & M Twister it's 620.00 with shipping for the bracket, filter and enricher that's a bit pricey for something that just looks good. well I am sitting on this one
