Extended Filter Standoffs Anybody Know a Good Machinist??

Ok,
so since I drive right by JP Cycles on my way to Orlando, I figured SWEET! I'll stop in and pick up a set of standoff extensions so that I can run the bigger filter on my Doherty / Desperado Air cleaner setup.

Pick up the last set they had and they are quite pricey for what they are.

Got home last night and went to install them. 2 of 3 go in all the way, no problems. The last one doesn't screw in all the way so I figure, ok, i'll just tapp the threads, there must be some junk in there or sumfin, I don't believe I overtightened them as I stopped as soon as I felt (early) resistance.

Go to back it out and it snapps inside the Doherty standoff!:angry::bang::angry:

Now, not only can i not run my extended filter, can't run the stock one unless I'm able to get the broken piece out of it.:angry:

I doubt JP cycles will send me a new set but has anyone using the extended filter male their own standoffs?

Need a little help fellas!

I'm sure youve tried but you cany get the tap to budge?? is the tap in there tight. it may take some time but working with the tap to remove it will probbly be the only way.. cany you remove it & try heating the said part to get it to expand, maybe it will lose the tap.. you may have already tried this, hope it helps, may be cheeper to buy a new part sometimes rather than spend alot of hrs working on it.. sorry dude

Sorry, maybe I was confusing with my rant, the tap isn't broken in there, it's one of the 30 dollar standoff extensions.

I will contact Doherty to see if they can make me a longer standoff to eliminate the extension altogether. If not, maybe there is a machinist in our membership that wants a project!:D

ok well as you know the tap is a harded alloy than the rest of the part, so now that it isnt the tap can you drill out the standoff extention,, maybe left hand drill bit,, be carefull. I'm guessin its flush or below the surface, mabe a screw extractor if you can drill a hole in it,, good luck

**UPDATE**

Got an email back from JP cycles telling me that they're sending out another set of stand off extensions no charge.

They didn't have to do that at all so I can't complain about that!:2thumbs:

Waiting to hear back from Doherty as the real solution would be to just have longer extensions from the beginning.

So if I'm understanding this right the original standoffs are bolted in also and not molded in like the S&S?
Good of J&P to do that for you.

that is correct. The standoffs are threaded into the backplate on the Doherty AC.

Then, in order to use the extended filter, you need extensions that bring out the teardrop cover about an inch.

Ideally, I will try to get Doherty to make complete standoffs that are longer and won't require the extensions but my backup plan is to use the extensions.

I guess pictures would help huh...:D

Let me know, I can make you a set (3) in 15 minutes.... I made mine(aluminum). Glad they backed there shit up!
