Crank sensor question.....

Hey guys, I was checking out Gasmans post on "how to service your Dog" And under the oil change pictorial he talks about removing and cleaning the crank sensor. I do not have that sensor on my 04 Bulldog. I have a black sensor like the one he does below his crank sensor. What is this sensor? The wires go to a rectangular finned box on the front of the bike-says accell on it. (possibly a voltage regulator??) When I unplug the sensor, it has two prongs on it. The reason I ask this question, is because my Dog has no leaks, except a tiny (one drip) after a decent ride. I seem to have located it to that sensor. But it seems like it just unplugs. I don't see how the part that goes into the engine comes out? Is there an O-ring or something in there? It is minor, but pissing me of. :job: I probably cofused the shit out of you guys:eek: And why don't I have a crank sensor? I downloaded a owners manual, and I am waiting to hear back from wicked cycles on a service manual. So maybe I won't be such a pain in the ass.:D
Thanks Dogs!

That's your stator plug and it does go to your voltage regulator. I've never had one out but I'm sure there is a seal that could be replaced.

Look in the How To section and open up Jakes thread on installing a new stator and you will see pics of how the plug is locked in.

As stated above..

Further, You don't have a crank sensor. Instead you have a cam pick up sensor in the nose cone on the right side of the motor. Ignition is still under the seat.

Thanks guys. I did try to do a search, but I didn't know what the sensor was. And i thought I was crazy:loony: not seeing the crank sensor. I will check out Jakes thread.
thanks again!

Your sensor (Crank sensor as Chris said) is in the nosecone;

Looks like this inside;

And when you pull the stand-off bolts you'll see this;

Two cautions;

1. mark the orientation of the crank sensor carefully and put it back in the same way -- can F up your timing otherwise.
2. The OEM stand-off bolts are crap. If you over tighten them they will snap. Then it's EZ-out time and that can suck.

He states in his first post that he knows he doesn't have a crank sensor. His question just relates to the stator plug.

Your stator plug uses no o-ring style seal or gasket, it feeds threw the case half and uses an RTV silicone to seal it in. If you want it to stop leaking you will have to remove the stator and reinstall it with some RTV. Not a big deal, just a bit of time to do the job, an hour or so.

Mike, S&S and BDM used the cam sensor up through 04. In 05 S&S followed HD in using a different (twin cam style) breather system and crank sensor.

Why, guess you will have to ask S&S or HD that but I would speculate that it is more accurate but that's just my opinion. Probably cheaper also using electronic ignitions.

Thanks Guys, you have been a great help. Especially the detailed pictures/post from bdmridgeback :2thumbs: for now what I did, since it was such a minor drip, I just got some clear RTV silicone and sealed around the Stator. I wiped it clean so you can't tell. About two hours later, i took the Dog for a ride (about an hour) and when I got home, it was bone dry. So easy fix for now. Then I enjoyed about a million:cheers: Thanks again guys!

Need a crankshaft position sensor, such as in the picture.
Help to buy one. Where can I buy this device? It is very necessary.

Show me where to buy online, please. Give link. Went to Harley dealer, they shrug.
Cheapest place to get them is on Ebay from BigDogParts Kingpin can pick one up for around $20.00. Everywhere else they are in the $50+

Searched ebay he doesn't have anything up you can try to PM him on the forum or just but this one a little more pricey:

You can also buy any stock Harley Igntion Sensor the plug harness will just be slightly different (will require slight mod) but is cheaper than the one posted above.
