Gizmo needs Speedo help

I recently bought a ASPT (assembled from parts) bike which has a Softail style frame with HD running gear (1340 engine). My problem is that it has Big Dog fuel tanks with a 2000 ProSport speedo which seems to run 10 mph higher than what my speed actually is. Is there a procedure to calibrate the speedo so that I'm closer to true bike speed? Using the mileage that the speedo provides between fill-ups comes up with about 62 mpg which I know just can't be true! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey, welcome to the site. First thing I would ask is it an Autometer speedometer you have. Don't know what BDM used back in 2000. If's it's an Autometer just call them and they will assist you over the phone. Quick and easy as I've called them before. The procedure has changed over the years.

Thanks for the input ... how do I determine IF it is a Autometer Speedo? All the speedo face reads is Big Dog and VDO. It's a analog gauge (mph) with a digital readout for accumulated mileage and zeroing so that I can figure my mileage between fill-ups.

If you are not able to reprogram the VDO speedo you have then you could purchase a speed sensor from ThunderHeart that is programmable to your bike gearing specs. It is very user friendly and the guys can walk you threw it over the phone if you have any issues. I want to say it is around $100 retail. You can look it up at these sites.....

Hope this helps:up:
