So it appears that The hi amp circuit / cranking will occur when the connection is helped by forcing the solenoid contacts.
The starter seems to be ok, the battery tested good at 2 different auto places, so can I make any assumptions here?
Is the VR a possibility? Compression release? Did not think I had one??? The jackshaft does not seem to be binding, just does not always shoot all the way out to engage. This appears to be a voltage issue?????

Sounds like you're not getting enough juice to your starter. What do the contacts on the inside of your solenoid look like? Can you post pictures? May want to consider a slam button to ensure proper solenoid engagement if you can fit one on your starter.

That is exactly what I think is going on. Even though the battery tested good on the little machine at the auto parts place, something tells me this 3 year old battery is the culprit even with it always being on a tender.

The contacts are only part of the issue the solenoid deals with. You may also have shorts in the windings for the electromagnet which is what's pulling the plunger forward to make the connection to pass the high amperage current to the starter motor....

Then again, replacing a 3-year old battery is a good preventive maintenance practice.:up:

Well I would say you need another battery. Was the testing as static test or a load/dynamic test?
I've never had a battery last over 2 yrs but then again mine get a lot of use thought the year.

I prefer the simple HD AGM batteries for $99. Available at any HD dealer and warrantied and they will do the job as I've proven.

yep i would have to agree with ray on this one,i have an hd battery,rated very high cca's,they put a meter on it and said it was rated at 430 amps,i wonder about that but it cranks,look in the middle of your rocker boxes to see if you have compression releases,good luck:cheers:

I was told that the HD AGM batteries went up in price
