Hi all- just picked my new 12" sissybar from the dealer thats been on back order for about 2 months, and something doesn't seem right. First off, the bottom of the bar is tapered and is really sloppy in the strut since the strut holes are not tapered. Also there is no hardware included. I can not find a sissybar-only part number for 06 since they are only listed with struts. The part no. on my reciept doesn't come up on the BDM website. (1 220 -000038-01) Just trying to find out if I have the right bar? Thanks in advance.

There is a recall on the sissy bar, some of them came being undersized where they fit into the fender strut, also it should of came with hardware. It is possible that your dealer sold you one he has had on shelf for a few years.I currently talked to my local BD dealer about the same issue, they said they usually have to shim it up to make it tight.I still am going to contact BD next week to get more info. GO TO NHTSA do a search.Recall #07E058000
There is a total of 5 recalls on the 06 K-9.They are listed on this site also.

Insert title here...
The sissy bar I bought for my '07 K-9 was also tapered but had "caps" that fit over the tapers and expanded when I tightened the bolts. All the hardware you need should be with the bar!!! If it's not I would find out why...

Considering the part number of the bar and struts for the '06 and '07 are the same I would think that the part number for just the bar is the same also, 223-000007-01.

Hope this helps!

PS... Mine definitely doesn't need any shimming!!! Hell, I can't get the damn thing off!!!

In the beginning of '06, I saw many 18" sissy bars that were tapered and kept breaking off the mounting bolt heads. Then in '07 a recall was issued and the replacement bars were "NOT" tapered, and they seem to be working perfectly, so far.

Now the idea (my idea), of using a bushing to make up the difference in space between the sissy bar and the strut worked for me with the original set up, quite good too, before the recall came out. So I guess BDM has figured out to utilize the same idea :D, so that they can re-use those sissy bars that were returned during the original sissy bar recall.

dead

Just wanted to post an upadte. Finally got my sissy bar issue resolved last week. BDM kept sending the undersized tapered bars. Finally the dealer took pics of the bar in my struts and sent them to their rep at BDM. Her response was that my struts aren't Big Dog struts, and they don't know where they came from but that was thier final stand on the matter.:bang::angry: :loony: So the dealer went above her and talked to someone that recommended the caps and hardware kit.:bang: So after about 5 months I finally got the sissy bar working. Thanks for the replies and thanks to Dave at Vandervest HD for going above and beyond to get this resolved.:2thumbs:

Hmmmmmm. Just out of curiosity, was the BDM's rep name Anne Dixon? Just reading another thread with some similar results.

If in fact it was her, I'm sure that someone at BDM would like to know. Like someone mentioned before, she represents BDM and the impression she gives to others is how BDM is perceived. It could be that she needs to attend some sensitivity training.
