Sissy Bar

Help ! My sissy bar flew off yesterday while I was running 90mph down the freeway. I just put it on my 2006 K9 and had to add the fender struts and everything. Both bolts just snapped and there it went. After a mile walk back down the freeway I found it on the shoulder of the road and it was not that messed up except for the two bolts stuck inside now ...
Any suggestions about why it happen or what to do to prevent it from happening again ? ? ? It had come loose once before and I just put it back on with stronger loctite. It does seem to vibrate around alot back there ... Any ideas on getting those broken off loctited bolts outta there ... Kinda sucked because I rode about 100 miles with it around my neck to get it back home ...

Thanks !

Damn, that sucks......hope it did not mess up your paint???

There was a recall on the 06 K9 sissy bar bolts (see ODI - Office of Defects Investigation) so you'll want to make sure you have the right replacement bolts once you get them out.

The best way to remove them will probably be an ez out or bolt extractor (maybe with a little heat?)......

That has happened before to guys. Hoat was having a bunch of problems with his. i think he ended up going with a different grade bolt. Don't remember if he went to a grade 8 or down to a grade 5 stainless...

I would think that you'll need heat for the locktite. Then a screw extractor should get it backed out.

u may want to keep an eye on ur strut bolts also:eek: i have had two break off, one this past wkend

This happened to me about a week ago and lost my sissy bar. In addition I scratched my paint and my struts. Have been researching how to get scratches out of struts. Have been told to use 1500 wet sandpaper and then polish out. Also saw online to use fBlackfire fine and/or heavy cut aluminum polish with a circular buffer. Sort of afraid to experiment but want the scratches out as they look like hell. When I do repair it and buy another sissy bar I will use some ss bolts.
ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYONE ON THE SCRATCHES?

Thanks Guys ! I'm gonna get those bolts outta there some how and get that sucker back on before the R.O.T. Rally in Austin. Any suggestions on where to get some replacement bolts ? ? ?

The bolt that broke this past weekend was that a bolt from mthe recall or one of the old style bolts or just a bolt that you bought yourself. Have you had the strut bolt recall done?
I just took my 06 K9 down and had the bolt recall done, usually I do all the work on my ride but this is warranty so it is a legal issue. When they went to take one of the bolts out it just fell out because it was broken about one thread in the frame. The new bolts are a higher grade with a double locking washer setup.

I haven't had the issue as of yet and hope I never do, but when I bought my sissy bar it did not fit my struts perfectly; they are R&D parts from ebay. So what I had done was to drill a small hole, tapped it in the struts and added a nice chrome button screw with silicone on the end; looks like it was designed that way. It looks clean and feels very strong. I will get pictures when I get home and post it.

There was a problem with a batch of Sissy Bar's of that era wherein the bar itself was found not to be of sufficient size. Big Dog replaced my sissy bar because of this. The bar size being too small allows excessive vibration/movement which over time will break the bar mounting bolts due to fatigue as I understand it.

There was a minimum bar size specification (tighter clearance seated in the hole of the struts; I think posted it long ago) when I ran into the same bolt breaking problem. Once BDM replaced it, I haven't had the issue happen again over 10k miles ago.

Yup grade 5 stainless!:2thumbs:
Thats true but since this is a recall issue I think it would behoove any person to follow recall protocol and let BD take care of it. If you don't and something happens which drags insurance and lawyers into it your liable to be left out in the cold.
Just sayin
