I plan on removing the tire/wheel myself, all they have to do is remove the tire and mount the new one.

Its funny how we as customers have to do that sometimes. Can't really blame them though its tough makin money in this economy so if the customer doesn't ask for it then why offer it.
Were your tire is splitting is in the tread splice. That part of the tread is the wing ending (it has different rubber stock than the middle of the tread) This is a manufacturer defect caused by either bad rubber stock or a curing problem. They will replace it free of charge. If one tire in the run did it more than likely they will be more of them. Avon should recall the tires in the run.

Usually Avon will contact the distributors and the distributors will contact the buyers if there is a recall. You can always check this site to see if your tires are on a recall list http://www.recalls.gov/rrtires.asp And you can always contact Avon Tyres
Excellent Mckee thanks for the info and the link. So far I only see a recall for the 240. Hopefully it stay that way. Of course Turks is a 250 sooooo......
