Went for a run on my 05 RB last week, maybe 75 miles.Made various stops for fuel,eating,ect..I get home and pull into the shop and turn the key off, turn the fuel off.Get off the bike and it starts tryin to crank, horn is blowing, lights are flashing :loony:LOL..Smoke started rolling from under the seat  so I yanked it off and grabbed a pair of side cutters that just happened to be laying on a shelf close by and snipped the hot wire to the battery .Went out the next day and fixed the wire I snipped but when I touch it to the positive post it starts smoking from the little box with the red and green lights, that box is melted all to heck.Thats the ehc?Any idea what caused this?Maybe a short somewhere?Best place to get a new ehc? Thanks,
Mike

I would ask if you had the original EHC in it and if so did you have the "service bulletin" fix that placed a resistor plug in the ignition switch behind the coil cover. This was a fix till the EHC was changed to a new version later.
Mine melted down like that a few months after I bought it and this resistor was put in after all the melted harness pieces and EHC were replaced. Mine even burned a hole in the side of the battery. I have an old thread on it here somewhere.

Either way it's smoked now so you should just get the Wire Plus system.

Thanks for the info fellas!

Dead, to bad I quit smoking lol..

Raywood, I'm guessing mine does'nt have the resistor and is old style EHC.

I have the extended warranty good till 2012,plus the recall on it.Talked to the dealer and everything should be covered or I would try and swap over to the wire plus. Also got on the list for the recalled rear wheel.I've never had a problem with the bike till this happened.

Also glad it done it as soon as I got off and not in the middle of the night.Could've burnt the whole shop down lol..

Even with the warranty your dealer may not have or able to get an EHC for awhile.

Well, I think I'm gonna go ahead and do the wire plus install myself.I should be able to install it and everything be fine? What should I check before installing it? I guess VR and stator as mentioned and check for any shorted, rubbed together wires. I need a manual for this thing lol..I guess I'll install it and see what happens and then troubleshoot from there if that doesnt fix it altogether.I saw something about the ehc being on backorder till september in another thread and I cant wait that damn long:lol:.

Well after all this time the dog is alive again! I got the wire-plus a while back and it has sat on the shelf for months.I sat down to install it a couple times but seems like someone would call or always had something going on.

I finally set a date and got it done.I got it all buttoned up and tried to start it.Of course the battery was dead.I trickle charged it the night before but I guess it shorted out along with the ehc or just died of old age lol.Got a new battery and charged it up.All lights, signals, ignition, ect worked great.I tried to crank it but it wouldnt start:bang:.Checked and wasnt getting any fire.SO I go back to the schematic and the one wire I didnt have hooked up was the ignition .Soldered it to the white/black jumper and walla. It cranked!

Only thing that I screwed up was the tach,it isnt working.Gotta look and see why.

I had a little fun with the ehc when I removed it..I killed it with a few rounds of .45acp.

Does the speedo work? I crossed my tach and speedo wires ( both green) . All good now. Just no Hi Beam for some reason, but I got all winter to figure that out.

Glad to hear you got it running again, minus your tach issue.

Speedo and odometer work fine. The tach just doesnt light at all.I was using Jake's "how to" instructions and everything went smooth until I got to the point where it said "now you're all done, just 18 ground wires" and I still had 2 or 3 wires left.I must have scrolled down and missed a page.I think I do have a green wire from the backbone that I didnt hook up.Thats it I bet.If you look closely in this picture you can find the culprit ..
