When this happens, and I do have a good Braille battery, it just coughs and shuts off. usually starting off at a red light. Then I get the clicking like its the starter again. Also getting almost a detonation backfire sometimes. If I try to rock bike in gear, sometimes it will then turn over. Any ideas? Iggy

the coughing sounds like its running rich. check your plugs they may be fouled up. if they are go through adjusting your carb.

If it's coughing on take off or acceleration, it has to do with your Carb setting. The cause is your accel pump, screw it all the way in then back out 1 full turn, twist the throttle, if it coughs go out 1/4 turn and try again. Keep turning out 1/4 turn at a time until you can twist the throttle without any hesitation. :2thumbs:

It just clicks when I try to start it. Battery is ok, changed-out starter 3 weeks ago. ??

All batteries are subject to "crapping out", even the almighty Braille. I would start by having the battery load tested. If indeed it checks out good, then your starter would be my next thing to check. Did you buy it new, used or re-built? I've learned that just because something is new does not mean it still works like it should. :job:

lOTS OF JUICE. REMOVED STARTER, STARTER WORKS FINE AFTER HOOKING UP TO A BATTERY. STILL GET THE CLICKING NOISE TRYING TO START?? What colors should be showing on EHC while tying to start?

The carb definitely needs to be cleaned and/or adjusted. I would also look in the gas tank, you could have dirt or the tank liner is deteriorating, blocking your fuel petcock. Rocking the bike will move the blockage in the tank, or the carb, out of the way and you can start the bike again. I would not try to start the bike in gear, it is much easier to turn over in neutral. I do not know why but, it is easier to start in neutral. I would put an in line fuel filter between the tank and the carb. Your float level may be too high as well. Check your carb.

You can buy a service manual from big dog motorcycles. go to the web site it is for sale on their site. i bought one for my bike. it is helpful. i also went to s and s cycles.com and bought a service manual from them. you can get rebuild info on the carb from the s and s manual and from their web site. you can get replacement parts for the carb from j and p cycles. starters will test as being good on a bench, then will not work when you put them in the bike, you need to load test it on a bench. The problem may not be the starter, may be the relay or solenoid.

maybe a muut point but have you check to make sure you are getting just ocer 14 volts back to the batt when the bike is running. I had been riding my my back for a couple of months with a VR going bad. Was running on the bat an failing regulator. always kept bike on a bat tender so it got charged after I rode it each time. Took a 160 mile trip and it did what you are discribing, would turn over maybe half a turn and then quit (bat was drained) push started it and got to my destination.

Not sure but discovered the spring on my starter shaft was broke off about 1/2 inch. I found the piece inside of the starter. The end looked finished/smooth so I reassembled it. After i sent bike to dealer 142 miles away, I discovered the spring on my old starter was longer than the one currently in there.
