Ive read lots of speedo problems here, here is mine, when I first turn on the key and fire it up the speedo will not work, if im rolling down the road and shut it off and refire it will work every time. I can sit and play with turning the key on and off while motor is dead and finally get it to go over to the trip meter and fire it up and its all good, any thoughts?

Check all the connections, clean the speedo sensor, take to a dealer and have it flashed.

mine did this when the battery was low. Test battery and then charge it. start bike and see if it works. I know it sounds silly but after I spent time ohm ing out wires and such this seemed to be the problem.

Keep your bike on the battery tender at all times you are not riding everyday. Then when you go to start the bike, be sure to wait for the processor to boot all the way, in other words watch the speedo needle and wait til it goes up and comes back down all the way. That's what I do and it works every time. I had the same problem when I first got the bike, didn't let the processor boot all the way. Supposedly there is a fix for this that can be downloaded to the ehc. The dealer should know about that and what to do.

Just an update, some of you were correct, its the battery for sure. I swapped it out with a known good battery and the problem was fixed. My bike is an 08 but I bought it new in July of this year, should this be a warranty battery or trash it and buy a new one? Never had any warranty work done so Im not sure how they work.

Doubt it's covered, but you could ask your local dealer or call BDM.

These batteries need to be on a good (AGM type battery compatible) storage/float charger whenever the bike is sitting. It's good for the battery and good to know your bike will start when you need it.

Get another original (DEKA) Harley battery of at least 310CCA.

My new battery wouldn't start my bike today after two weeks sitting. It WAS on a charger but I think it didn't have a good connection while sitting in the garage. Did a fast charge 15min. to get it started and went for our ride to charge as well.

If the EHC has the latest FLASH LOAD, the SPEEDO should sweep once when you turn on the key and AGAIN right after you press the START button and start the engine. This RESETS the SPEEDO electronics again after a heavy battery voltage drain during cranking.

HD batteries are warrantied for 6 months then pro-rated till 12 months. Just go get a new one from the HD dealer and keep it on a tender. I go through one every year
