gas cap 05 Ridgeback

Has anyone found a metal replacement to the bottom of the original gas cap for the 05's? I replaced the cap but kept the original plastic threaded part that goes into the gas tank but the plastic is swelling up and making it difficult to remove everytime I fill up. :spank:

thanks

I took my original gas caps on my Mastiff and very carefully sanded down a little bit of the pitch on the threads to compensate for the swelling. That was like 3 years ago and have not had a problem since.

If you decide to try it, just be very careful and take your time, you do not want get carried away or have to much high speed action since the plastic can melt and make it worse.

If you have access to a lathe, you could chuck it up and spin is slowly and go very them easy and remove some of the thread also. JUST ENOUGH TO MAKE THEM A LITTLE LOOSER ON THE FIT.

I bought a custom cap and had to use the plastic bottom part ... I don't want to invest in another expensive cap ... yet ... I will try to sand it and hopefully I won't get too wild on it.

Thanks Fibersnake ...

The Ethanol will still continue to swell it even after it is sanded until it eventually cracks.

There is no metal replacement to the plastic part seens how the plastic part IS the entire gas cap other that a stainless steel cover on top.

Mine are entire BILLET replacement vented gas caps that screw into the factory BDM polished Landmark paintsaver ring that is installed in the tank.

Aside from the factory Landmark cap, I am the only one offering a complete billet replacement due to the odd thread design.

Well I'm trying to not buy another cap ... I just bought an "expensive" top to my original cap. I guess I could just use it as a paper weight. When the time comes I will call you again Jake.

Thanks for all the responses.

I wish I had more money.
Its easy surfer. Sand it down and it will last years. You may have to sand it again once or twice but to hell with dropping that kind of coin on a gas cap.

I tried sanding it but the plastic looks like crap. So I'm biting the bullet and getting a cap from Jake. Merry Christmas to me! I'll have to thank the wife later ... like in March. :spank: :D

landmark paint saver

Does anyone know if you removed the paint saver ring , would the welded in bung have a standard H/D thread ?

Yes, Supposedly the welded in Bung is HD standard... BUT...

... It is near impossible to remove the paint saver ring on 95% off the Dogs.
They are epoxied in and unless it was one of the 5% that didn't get installed very well from the factory and fell apart, there is a very good chance you'll mess up the paint getting it out.
