2008 K9 wiring for rear lights

Hi everyone. I am in need of a wiring genius! I have imported a 2008 K9 into the UK, and to comply with our lighting regulations, i need to fit 2 separate amber LED indicators to the rear of the bike. Easy! BUT, the indicators interact with the brake lights, and i just can't seem to figure out a way of making a separate pair of indicators work. Also, the hazard warning lights have to be wired to operate with the ignition OFF, as well as on.
If anybody has a wiring diagram, or has knowledge of how the system works, i would really appreciate some help....
Thanks in advance.

Yeah and there is a LED replacement set that gives the functioanlity of a red brake and yellow turn signal from the same fixture. That meets the Europe and Canadian indicator regulations. Try the search feature.

OH AND WELCOME TO THE SITE, before the intro police get you!!

Picking up a Service Manual for the European Models might help as well. They have all the wiring diagrams.
The Canadian models had the seperate lights as well.

Wow, quick responses, thanks guys! I am trying to find something on the LED replacement sets, but no luck yet....... The problem is that the brake and indicator inputs operate down 1 wire, and there must be an override function within the indicator brake light system!! Whatever happened to simple relays?!

I'll keep looking too I know someone posted a link to them, because I had seen a double stack of brake lights and this LED set was a single housing solution to meet that requirement of amber turn and red brake light. :loony: now where was it........

I found this but this is not the one I am thinking of, this is an entire new light........still looking....

This USA wiring maybe it'll help ya out. Looks like brown and violet wires control signals...

Here's the 07 wiring diagram (I cannot see any changes to 08):
http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/technical/2807-2006-2007-wiring-schematic-diagram.html

I put on an additional relay for the brake light (got the tip from Lewis here in the forums). You need to find the + cables form either the front and rear brake. Put these on the relay and then get the outcoming minus pole to the brake lights.

The other way is to take the flashers from the front also for the back. But I'm not sure if the EHC will like double watts for a longer time......

I got these flashers/rear lights (they are smaller than the OEM :2thumbs:):
front: LED-Blinker COLORADO in verchromtem ALU-Gehäuse, Paar bei eBay.de: Markenspezifische Teile (endet 26.02.11 13:55:33 MEZ)
rear: Rücklicht /Blinker COLORADO in verchromtem ALU Gehäuse bei eBay.de: Markenspezifische Teile (endet 06.03.11 14:43:49 MEZ)

Or you put into the original housing:
front: LED-Blinker Einheit COLORADO bei eBay.de: Markenspezifische Teile (endet 13.02.11 13:26:41 MEZ)
rear:LED Rücklicht-Blinker Einheit COLORADO, Paar bei eBay.de: Markenspezifische Teile (endet 09.03.11 08:58:26 MEZ)

These LEDs are smaller than OEM, adjustment is needed.

All lights are street legal in EC with CE marks.

Good luck!!!!!!!

Thanks again Jochen! Please can you tell me, if i run 2 wires form the front indicators [violet left, and brown right] to a pair of separate small [earthed] LED indicators on the back, will they work? How would i go about making the hazard warning lights operate with the key out of the bike? I presume i would have to put a battery live feed to somewhere on the EHC? Scarey!

They will work - but you will have DOUBLE watts on the EHC. You can read here in the forums how weak that thing is :bang:. Taking the front wires for the rear is the way another German guy did it - but I do not know how long it will last (I think nobody really knows - may be forever or one season???????????).

Therefore Lewis told me to seperate the brake lights from the EHC by using a relay.

OK Jochen. So your rear running lights are still together with your rear indicators using the new LED boards? And you now have a separate brake light on the bike?

Yes,

there are 3 different circuits (plus minus pole) on the new system:
- rear light
- brake light
- indicator (flashers in American English)

Took all cables from the EHC, the additional for the brake light is operated by the relay.

The brake light needs a minus pole to work! No positive (plus)!!

When working on the wiring do not forget to make it waterproof - check the forums on that!!!!!

Thanks again Jochen. Just one last question. How can i make the Hazard Warning lights operate, with the ignition switch OFF?

No idea on that!!

Is this a must-do in UK??? I thought we poor guys in Germany have the worst legislation on this kind of stuff , but we have no law for these Hazard warning lights......

Do you run into probs with emmsissions and noise??? That is the major problem here .

I know you shouldn't necessarily fix something that ain't broke but you might want to think about a rewire and it seems like you are more than capable of doing it yourself. Many on this forum have ditched the EHC and gone to a wire plus system, me included. However, I'm currently building a bike and got a wiring harness from Scooters Performance in Florida and each wire is labelled, laser printed or something like that, every few inches along the wire so even an idiot like me should be able to do it and roadside repairs should be much easier. No computers, EHC's, brain boxes etc etc etc - back to basics. Don't know if they do one for EFI bikes though. John runs the show there and he's a good man. Very knowledgable and very helpful.

Thanks Lee. Because its an EFi, i'm going to have to struggle along bypassing the EHC!!

Jochen, please can you tell me what relay was used for your brake light? Does your brake light now work with ignition off? I guess it must be low wattage for LED's? For the Hazards, what is your opinion on putting an LED Hazard warning relay [with a separate switch around the handlebars] with a feed straight from the battery, and simply link into the left and right indicator wires? Or maybe 2x LED indicator relays to keep left and right wiring apart?
Emissions were fine on the EFi, but i also bought a 2008 Carb K9 with V&H Big Radius pipes, and i think that will fail on both emissions, and definitely noise! The EFi failed on noise with the standard exhaust at 103dB [limit is 99dB], so i've got more work there!

The new K9's coming to Canada have 2 lights at the back. Maybe it would be possible for you to get the wiring diagham from BDM.

Hi. Thanks for the info. Do you mean they have a stop/tail and a separate indicator on each side? I think BDM would be reluctant to help, and i guess it would also entail buying a new EHC.

@roughrider,
got your PN.
The relay is a standard automotive one - in micro size. Looks like this one:

It is not installed yet, but I figured out how it works by putting the wires on the battery ;) . The realy will put in a friend who knows about all that electrical sh§t.

You connect all the wires from your new combi rear lights (they have rearlight+, flasher+, and Minus-) but not the brake wire to the wires that you have in your Dog. Now the brake light will turn on when you put the only left wire of the rearlight/flasher combi to the Minus pole of the battery - not the Plus!!

Did not test it if it also works with ignition off.

With ignition on you get 3,9 V + from the wires of the brake controls. This should be enough for the relay.

My bike now looks like this - I'm making the wires waterproof to protect the EHC....
