Alright, So here is another problem (yes I have looked all over the forumn) when the bike is cold and I go from neutral to 1st the bike lunges makes a loud clank and shuts off. also when I have the bike in first and pull the clutch lever it will not move. I spoke with a local HD shop and they said it is probably the clutch plates after warmed up it rides fine. any places to try any good how to's on replacing clutch plates. would like to save some $$$ if possible.
Thanks
The lack of a easy clutch pull device is not your problem.
The wet clutch plates are sticking when the bike is cold. You don't need to replace the friction plates unless the clutch slips when your riding. My suggestions...
(1) Before you put the transimmsion into 1st gear, push the bike and have it rolling, then drop it into 1st. You can do this from the seat. This works for my old Shovelhead.
(2) Remove the friction pads and give them a light sanding to clean off the oily glaze that makes them sticky. This will keep them from glueing together when the clutch basket is pressed together for days, weeks, months on end.
(3) Go with a dry clutch like those found on open belt primaries.
