Over Rev'ed My Dog- Oil Press. Drop

Hey Guys,

I wanted to get your opinion on what I could have done to my bike (04 Mastiff/107) and what I should start looking for to repair it. You see... a couple of buds and I were at the local drag strip running the old Nova in the shotgun tournament and with all the excitement and the smell of race fuel in the air, needless to say when we finished up we jumped on the dogs and opened 'em up. Well I've been noticing my clutch slipping a little a couple weeks prior but this time I noticed my rev light started flashing at high RPM and I wasn't getting the acceleration im use to; after a few more quick accelerations I started getting the red Oil pressure light blinking... I know I know... I’m a dumb ass for not taking preventive measures but to be honest, it was just one of those days where i just felt like hawlin' ass :bang:. Anyhow now that the light started flashing it's repeatable; every time I take the bike above 3000 RPM it kicks on regardless of which gear I’m in, but if I ride conservatively and shift before I hit 3k it doesn't come on and just rides normal. I have the service manual at the house but it doesn’t get into the depth of detail I'm looking for on the oil system so my next best option are you guys. I plan on figuring out what exactly it is and repairing it myself; I rebuilt this bike back in '09 so we have history and I with a little advice from you guys I'm sure I can tackle this little issue too.

Thanks in advance guys

Wish I had an answer for ya but seems a little weird to me. If you had damaged something in the engine I would think it would do it all the time. Any noises coming from the motor that were not there before?

First thing I would do is put a manual gauge on the motor and make sure it's not an electrical problem. Your rev limiter should've saved the motor even with a slipping clutch.

I haven't noticed any unusual noises comming form it, but then again, as soon as the light comes on I let off of it or change gears. I don't want to damage anything further, ya know?

Thanks Vegas, that's a good start, I'll get a guage but where exacly should I install it and what pressure ranges should I be looking for?

Like Vegas said. Get a manual gauge and you will see what pressures you are running at. You may not have done anything and it could just be a weird anomaly

The pressure sender port would be best. I haven't ever had a mechanical gauge on a V Twin. I'm guessing over 10psi at idle and 25-30 at 3000 rpm HOT. These other guys would know better. For the light to be coming on, it has to be below 5 psi +or-.

FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THEM DO A LEAK DOWN
TEST ON BOTH CYLINDERS,THE 117CI SHOULD BE RUNNING AT BETWEEN 180-210 AND BOTH SHOULD BE RUNNING ABOUT THE SAME. THAT TEST WILL SHOW ANY DAMAGE OR HOW MUCH.

NO, BUT IF YOU KNOW YOUR BIKE WELL, ANYTIME YOU FEEL ANY POWER LOSS, A LEAK DOWN WILL SHOW ANY DECREASE IN POWER

Did you get your Dog wet, by any chance?

I've heard that these things don't mix well with water.
why come on here and try to cause problems????????? you already admitted you don't know anything about Big Dogs so just go somewhere else if all you are going to do is bash. i agree you need a time-out. a LONG one. :zzdisappointed::zzdisappointed:

Hmm... that's interesting, I don't really think about that. I associated the loss of power with a slipping clutch, atleast that's what it felt like. It was riding fine until recently when I would really get on it, the engine would rev up but I wasn't feeling the tug I'm use to. None the less I think that's a seperate issue... well atleast it was until I pushed through it and caused the Oil pressure light to come on. Thnaks, I'll give BD a call and get their take on it as well. The guys here at the local shop don't mind passing along helpful acvice.

Does anyone have some sort of break down on the oil system for these V-Twins I could reference. the service manual isn't very detailed and doesn't even point out where the sensor's located.

Do the oil light and the over rev go back to normal when you let off the gas? If the manual gauge shows good oil pressure it may be something in the electrical telling you to reset. I don't know this for sure just brain storming. No unusual noises!

You should be able to go to the S&S website and get the info on the oil system. They have some pdf files you can download. Be sure to let us know what you find, this is the first time I have seen this problem mentioned here on the site.

change your oil, it might be thinning, the oil might be broken down sitting of the sensor, just thinking of the easy things first
