Over Rev'ed My Dog- Oil Press. Drop

Does anyone have some sort of break down on the oil system for these V-Twins I could reference. the service manual isn't very detailed and doesn't even point out where the sensor's located.
The oil sending unit is on the right side of the engine at the oil pump. Might want to pull out the tappet screen and check it as well. Look at Gas Man's How to service your dog thread. He points out the tappet screen and the pressure switch is located adjacent to it.

Seeing how the oil light is nothing more than a malfunction indicator it could be anything setting it. I would pull the code history and see what is setting it off to know what to look for.

First thing I would do is put a manual gauge on the motor and make sure it's not an electrical problem. Your rev limiter should've saved the motor even with a slipping clutch.
Get a gauge on there like Vegas recommends .... get some actual numbers.

The pressure sender port would be best. I haven't ever had a mechanical gauge on a V Twin. I'm guessing over 10psi at idle and 25-30 at 3000 rpm HOT. These other guys would know better. For the light to be coming on, it has to be below 5 psi +or-.
On the Harley"s I have owned with mechanical gauges , oil pressure at idle can drop to 0 if your under 1000rpm , at 3000 I would get 35 psi or better.

Do the oil light and the over rev go back to normal when you let off the gas? If the manual gauge shows good oil pressure it may be something in the electrical telling you to reset. I don't know this for sure just brain storming. No unusual noises!

You should be able to go to the S&S website and get the info on the oil system. They have some pdf files you can download. Be sure to let us know what you find, this is the first time I have seen this problem mentioned here on the site.
RRRUFF, Yes once I let off the throttle the rev light goes right away, the oil pressure light is the one that has me concerned. it's the one that comes on when rev'n up around 3k. I'll check out the S&S site to see whats available. I'll be sure to follow up once I've located the problem, you can count on it.

change your oil, it might be thinning, the oil might be broken down sitting of the sensor, just thinking of the easy things first
Popeye, this actually crossed my mind and I think I'll go ahead and do it first, maybe there’s something going on with the filter, perhaps i got a bad one and it's possibly clogged and restricting the flow of oil... who knows.

omad2day, how would or could I go about pulling the code... not sure it's possible anymore as I've replaced the EHC with a wire plus from Jake.

Get a gauge on there like Vegas recommends .... get some actual numbers.
I'm stopping by and picking up a guage tomorrow after work, hopefully get to work on it this weekend.

Good to know, this'll at least give me somthing to reference

Thanks for all the advice guys, One things for sure one can always find good help here.

I had the same thing occur last summer and it turned out that there was a small hole in one of the oil hoses that ran from the oil tank to the engine. Though it wasn't really leaking anything telltale (until I got underneath and saw a small drop on the line) it did effect the bike in a similar way.

According to the tech, at the higher revs, the tiny puncture (which was caused by the stainless hoses rubbing against each other) allowed air to be sucked in. This caused the oil light to come on and go off at the lower rpms. Might be something you want to check.

When I first built the Ebay K9 I couldnt get the oil preasure right and beins the bike was built from junk off Ebay I didnt take into acount that some off the parts could have been defective nor did I take into acount that I liked a lot of oil preasure so I shimmed my pump to jack up the preasure and again not noin no better used the stock braided oil lines that were nuthin but plastic lines covered with braid and had one colaspe which of coarse met no preasure if you run the shit out of it you might have hade one of the oil lines colaspe which would restrict the oil flow in the motor or you might have sheared the key on the oil pump shaft but the first thing I wood do is hook up a gauge as that will tell you everything

Reving the engine up should make the oil pressure come up. Get that mechanical guage and change out you sending unit switch. Fairly cheap parts. Here is a picture of the oil sending unit switch, ignore the circle that was for another post. The switch is right behind the circle with the black boot on it. This is also where most of the guys mount there guages.

1. Take off the sender and throw it in the trash. It only works when pressure is below 5.

2. Get a good 0 - 60 oil filled gauge from eBay. Should idle at 10 psi. 30 @ 3000.

3. Do a compression test.

4. Drain primary, check clutch plates.

Thanks guys, and sorry i haven't been able to get back to the forum. My job shipped me out the middle east for a couple of days that ended up turning into a week and a half. I'm going to try and get to the bike this weekend. Thanks again for all the info the pic.
