2008 K9 wont start

I am hoping someone can help me with this one. My 2008 K9 is giving me all sorts of trouble getting started this year. I trickle charged the battery up to full got a full tank of gas in it. However when I put the key in the bike turns on so it has battery the tach goes to full and then drops down back to about 4grand. When I hit run the fuel pump kicks in but never stops running. I can never hit the start button to get it started. The fuel pump just keeps running and running.

I called my dealer\mechanic but he is so swamped that he said he cant get the bike in for 3 weeks. I don't want to wait that long and was hoping someone else had this issue and it was a simple thing that I am not aware of. Please help!

Try the batt first as mentioned just because it reads 12 volts doesn't mean it has the AMPs. I replaced the batt in mine with a HD AGM batt it was about $119 bucks. Also check all terminals and grounds for tight ness and make sure your ciruit breaker hasn't popped and you're not gettin a full charge.

Oh and ya better do a intro Headcheese before somebody jumps ya!

It never gets that far. I hit run the fuel pump starts up but it never stops. I can press the start button all I want but nothing happens. When I just did it the voltage never drops on the battery.

I'm not sure how to check that. However there is a noise coming from the tank like a running motor and I cannot see or smell gas spilling anywhere so it was my guess that the pump is running but not doing anything.

Take the fuel line off the throttle body. Place end of hose in a container and turn ignition switch on. You should get a pressurized gushing of fuel. It should come out with force. If you don't , my guess is the screen is clogged or the pump is bad. I believe you can inject air in the system through the hose , but use light air pressure. If that doesn't work fuel pump removal would be necessary.
Good Luck

cheese, the battery should read AT LEAST 12.8 V. as stated in the Service Manual....
do a search, plenty of info on this one.....

The ECU for the fuel injection is having an issue. Do not confuse this with the EHC. The ECU is the black box that says S&S on it. Since the fuel pump does not shut off, the tach does not drop below 4,000 rpm, and there is no starter function, this indicates an issue with the ECU itself. The box file may be corrupt (if you're lucky). You will have to take it in to have it re-loaded. If that does not correct it, the ECU will have to be replaced.

Thanks Mojo. I was wracking my head trying to figure out what is going wrong. I can see lights blinking from the bottom of that box next to the battery case. I don't know exactly what that means I have a Service Manual on order. On the good side my mechanic called me yesterday and let me know that someone backed out of an appointment so he might be able to squeeze me in earlier than expected.

Now to learn how to tie down the bike and transport on a trailer for the first time.

Thanks. I ended up getting darn near the same trailer as in that first link you posted so I ended up doing the same thing. Worked great. The bike didn't move at all.

Sounds to me like the fuel pump is not building up pressure. With that in mind the fuel pick up / filter in the tank could be clogged or for some reason u lost the prime on the pump.

Did you run it out of gas?

You MUST have a EFI non-carbed bike if the fuel pump continuously runs. Chances are it's not the battery. Pull the throttle body fuel line an see if the pump is working. If it's pumping ok then plug the hose and see if the pump stops after reaching pressure. Pickup could be plugged as mentioned before. Pull the tank and have it checked out.

You may need a new pump. The batt should be 12.8v minimum off charger for an hour.

well all said and done the ECU was shot. The good news was that S&S covered it under warranty so I did not have to buy a new one. Just had to pay for labor. Back riding now
