Noisy 117 Video

Scoot has started making some noticable noise these last few thousand miles and looking for some suggestions. 15K on the scoot and running Amsoil 20W-50. Pushrods were adjusted 1500 miles ago at last oil change at 3 turns out. 4turns were louder than current.

What do you mean by three turns out?

When you adjust the push rods back the push rod out till you have some play. Then turn them back in till they make contact (if you do this by hand it's easier to feel). Mark the push rod with a sharpie and turn them in an additional 3.5 turns. (Note: not out)

You are correct sir. Disregard the "out" in my post. I made an additional 3 turns in and was quieter than the 4 turns recommended in our manuals and S&S. I even made a "how to" video on it awhile back ;>)

As Earl said, shorten the pushrod until it is loose then turn the pushrod INTO the lifter 3 full turns(Lengthen the rod) after bringing the pushrod into contact with the lifter, then wait 20 minutes and make sure that you can spin it with your fingers before you move to the next pushrod. If you cannot spin it with your fingers, you will have to back it off until you can spin it and add an additional full turn of shortening after you can spin it.

Ohh ok

Out could mean increasing the length of the push rod as well....

I forgot about the excellent How to you did. Ya even had blue gloves to match yer paint. I wonder if it's time for some new lifters....?

Thank's erldawg. Had to wear the gloves since I just got my nails done.....kidding of course ;>) I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and see first hand what chemicals do to hands over a course of 20 years and that won't be me, lol! New lifters....maybe? I have to change out a head gasket soon so I'll measure the lifters when I pull the heads. I've heard these engines make noise but wanted to make sure I was hearing what everyone else is also hearing on thier scoots. Preventive maintenance I guess.

I just had a completed rebuild at 18k for what I thought was lifter noise.
Does yours get worse when it gets hot?

I had piston slap and my crank was at .006 its very quiet now

make sure the screen is clean at the check ball valve.

if that gets clogged it hinders oil flow to the top end.

TDC when adjusted the rods?

Screen was actually replaced and TDC was as close as you could get without the tool.

So....is this something to expect from the 117? Looking at going with 600 cams but want to make sure all is well before doing so.

I have heard over and over that the 117 is noisy, period. Listening to the video I will tell ya yours is not as loud as mine is. Sometimes I think I should fill up with diesel.... LOL.

My bike just now turned 2700 miles as of yesterday and I have adjusted the pushrods twice in the last 1k miles to try to quiten it but had no effect. My riding buddy has an 08 PitBull and his sounds almost as loud as mine and he is at abt 5k miles.

I saw a post on here about the ticking noises a while back in which someone stated.... "If it ain't ticking, it ain't running"

So I just ride and if something is gonna go, then it's gonna go and I will fix it if it does.

I just listened to the video and it sounds just about right to me. Hold on let me go listen to my 2008 Ridgeback.

Ok, and 10 minutes later, it sounds just right to me.:D

That's a sigh of relief guys :>) I knew these engines made a little bit of noise but I'm a stickler when it comes to my scoot. Any new noise or feel has to be looked into and with going with cams soon, didn't want any surprises down the down.
