another ECU quesion

Energy One
did the normal search stuff. can't find what i need, so gotta ask.

wife was riding her 03 mastiff with me last night. i looked back and her headlight was off. i thought....mmm ECU finally went out.
called the son to bring me tools and my spare ecu.

after taking out the old one i noticed one black box looking deal (relay?). anyway i left it off the new one. plugged it in, bike started right up. kewl..ready to go..right? NOPE... headlight didn't come one. rode home anyway.
then i got the relay off the old one and installed on new ecu... bike did the same thing..no power, etc. took it back off and bike started, but no headlight.

so.........after a long read..(SORRY) WTF is this black box (RELAY)?? and does it control the headlight?

thanks for the help.

Start with the simple things. Did you try a new light bulb? Have you inspected the plug? Older plastic plugs are bad to melt. There is a new ceramic replacement for our dogs. Did you check to see if you're getting voltage to the plug? If so, then it's probably one of the two things mentioned above. There are also wires that connect with a small plug in underneathe the tank. Check to see if it came loose. Sometimes the little plastic "keeper" on the plug will break and allow it to separate. Are all your other lights working properly?

with that "RELAY" unplugged from the ecu. everything works cept the headlight.

just wondering what that relay is how to get a new one. and does it control the headlight.

ok...talked to strokers.
it's possible the new ecu or ehc has a built in starter relay. and it's coincidental the headlight bulb went out.
i'll check the bulb.

thanks.

Oh "hell to the no you didn't". After that long, thorough explanation of checking the simple things first, LIKE THE LIGHTBULB, you called Strokers and have the nerve to reply back on this thread that you NEED TO CHECK THE LIGHTBULB because they told you to? Good God Almighty Steve! Not quite sure what to think about you. Hell! For a moment there, it felt like you could have been my wife. She has to get the same information from someone else for it to be right too. And then, it was her idea!

i hear ya brad. i'm not even at the bike right now...at work...
mind starts wondering "WTF is wrong with the bike"

ya'll asked me to check the light bulb, which i will tonight.

i do appreciate this forum and ya'lls help! i mean that sincerely.

Step one check bulb.
Step two check wiring connector to bulb.
Step three check for power at conector.
Report back and you can go from there.

abm,
The issue you have from what I can tell from your description is commonly known as "thread Jacking". It's a lot easier to keep up with if you start your own thread so we can all focus on helping one brother at a time and not confussing similar issues on different bikes within the same thread. This thread belongs to Steve! :spank:

Now thats funny (and SO true) :D

bulb is fine...(worked in other bike)
all other lights working.
all connections are good. (haven't checked to make sure power to all of them YET!!!)

still the main question...and i was only curious as to what does the relay do?

bike starts and runs fine without the relay in the new EHC.
btw i did order the wires plus kit today

and did you really call me a bitch?? LMAO (jus cause it's my ole lady's bike..LOL)

okay guys...here's my update... worked on the bike last night.

tracing all connections, etc. and checked power to the headlight. HAD NO POWER TO THE PLUG!!

the black and red wires were touching each other. (didn't even notice it). guess, that shorted out either the EHC or the Relay, or both.
once i replaced the relay i was getting power to the headlight. re-installed the bulb. didn't come on. (bulb NO GOOD NOW) no biggie, i'll get another bulb.
also i did find a little black wire in the back of the EHC that pulled out. Not sure where it goes, but assuming to the headligt (ground?)
ALL is good now.
except a few wires to the rear turnsignal that the tire appeared to be rubbing and cut the wires. (i'll fix them this weekend)

Thanks for all your comments, and suggestions. very much appreciated...even yours badbrad... :)

just sharing my experiences.

You'll be so glad you went with the wire plus. I thought the wires on the pitbull and ridgeback going to the rear lights ran inside the struts. How did your tire rub the wire?

On my RB the wires to the tail lights go from the battery box thru a hole in the fender under the seat and under the fender they are held in place with clips and the wires go to the back of the struts and in between the fender and struts. If the wire comes loose under fender it will for sure rub with the tire.

 happened to me twice.

same on this mastiff. under the seat and up against the fender. the tire rubbed the wires right where they go through to the right rear light.

UP on the lift if goes... looks like the tire gotta come off to get to the wires to do a proper repair.
