i have a 2006 k-9 on several occasions after its hot i stop for a few min and try to restart, i get no thing but a click if im on a hill i can jump start, what drives me nuts is that it only happens now and then, sometimes i go on long rides and stop to get gas or something and theres no problem; im sure its heat related but why it only happens sometimes. if i let it cool down it starts right up. any body have any clues?

Also check your connections and voltage regulator out put. Some 05 and 06 had bad regulators. Shoudl put out over 14 votls at idle hot or cold. Also how old is your battery and have you had it load checked.

you need to do a search on "how too" and get an idea what others have done to correct the problem. It could be your starter solenoid, you Ignition module or ignition coils they all get hot and could be the issue. Before you start the bike take a heat gun and apply heat to each of those I mentioned and see if it starts. You may also want to jump start it with a wire from the battery to the starter. Positive Bat to Green wire on starter. If jump start works than it could be your switch at the hand controls. There are so many ifs, you just need to chase it down. It could also be the EHC which is not cheap, it also gets hot.

Check the battery voltage at terminals. Dogs need 12.8 volts minumum to properly function. Heat will cause battery problems as well. Check all terminal crimps and and connections for tightness.

It should be charging at a little more than 12.9 VDC at Idle. but you do have an older bike so the charging system might not work as well as the newer ones. As long as it is charging with higher RPM's then I would not worry about it. Just keep it in mind so if your sitting in traffic a while at idle, keep your headlight on low beam. If your not having starting issues, no need to fix anything.
