spit and sputter

I have a quick question on a slight issue i got with the dog...again....While under power in only 5th and 6th gear. If i am going cruising speed, and not romping on it, it will start to skip, spit and sputter, but then if i grab a handful of throttle, it runs perfect. Any ideas? Also....probably not related, but effing plug wire keeps popping off of the coil...grrrr

what RPM range are you running in?????????? does not like under 2250 rpm. if this is the problem, just downshift.

as far as the coil wire, take a pair of pliers and try squeezing the connector a little through the boot. not much or you will get it out of round.

Make sure your vacuum caps are intalled and not blown on your Manifold.

Is your idle good?

check your plug color

I am running a forcewinder air cleaner i believe with a chrome flame cover over the outside. I have the V&H Big Radius 2 into 2 exhaust.

I had it tuned by Speed's in Laconia during Bike Week. It was running like shit prior to the tuning. They said that there was a vent cap in the carb that needed to be open on these bikes, and mine was closed.

The bike runs and idles fine. It only does this in 5th and 6th gear when I am just cruising (holding the throttle to just maintain speed). For instance, if I am going 65-70mph down the highway in 5th gear, or a little faster in 6th, and i am just cruising along, that is when it will happen.

No changes other than tuning. They had it on the dyno, and said it was fine...but then again, dyno is just turning the throttle balls out.

They did put new plugs in it and leaned it out a little.

I agree with the rubber plugs. They do go bad within a year or so. Replace if in question. Also be a good idea to spray the intake seals, front and rear with the bike running at idle. Spray from Intake side of bke towards primary side. This way you will be less apt to get overspray in the intake. If the motor changes rpm at all when you spray the intake, then you have an intake leak.

How lean did they lean it out? You might be running too lean at highway speeds. If too lean you will get a surging feeling.

I have a cone shaped air cleaner and would experience the same problems with it facing forward I turned it up and have no issues now. The guys at thunder cycles told me that it would lag because of the cone shape screwing up the air velocity. Nice to spend 600.00 to make the bike run bad.[/I]

I'm having the same problem with a stock set up. But, I also get some sputter if I hold 3rd or 4th right before shift point. Hit the throttle or shift and it goes away for a while. Going to try re-adjusting the carb this weekend.

I wish I had more money.
Sounds like you may be a little lean.

Agreed your running lean, mine did it when I bought it stock off the showroom floor. Would cruise at normal speeds 65 - 70 and it would spit and spudder with the throttle at a constant setting. To stop it, I would have to roll on or off the throttle.

Check your acc pump in the carb, does it have a good fan squirt of fuel ? Also what jets are you running? With that kind of air cleaner I would suggest a 32 or 33 intermediate jet, and 76 main jet.

everything that everyone above is saying, but sounds like carb. adjustment problem. even though you had it dynoed etc, adjusted at some shop, I have not found one shop that knew what they were doing out of over four different ones. you can get info from S&S about everything you need to no about your carb. from them and do it yourself, and do it better.

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but I will check all of those things this week and report back. They all sound possible, so I will try em all and report back!
