Help Needed, Clutch issues

Need help, I have performed the clutch adjustments many times in the past couple of years, now i have new issue. About 8 months ago, i found the clutch basket almost off. Retightened and adjusted clutch rod and cable, no issues until now.

Was running it hard a week ago with no issues, 200 miles. This past saturday was riding normal, ran fine until couple hrs later came up to red light, only half clutch. got down on it and the clutch slipped but the clutch lever had full clutch again. later on, got down on it again, clutch lever only half there, got down again and slipped but clutch was back.

Took off primary cover and checked basket, no slack. put back together and adjusted and ran fine for 2 hrs sunday until we were cruising up freeway about 90 mph, saw clutch lever getting slack as we rode. Got home and no clutch left. Took Clutch rod cover off and had to turn the clutch rod about 1 turn or so to touch clutch plate. pressed in clutch cable, felt bound up. Loosened push rod and a little pop and clutch is very tight.

Planning on taking the clutch basket apart tonight when i get home, was looking for other ideas while i am in there on what to look for.

It sure sounds like a broken clutch basket to me. You'll need to pull it completely off to do a proper inspection. Sometimes when the break, they tend to look ok as long as a little pressure is keeping everything pushed together.

Will i be able to physically see if it is broken? will it be the plate that is broken?

One thing you may want to check just to rule it out is the clutch actuator/ball & ramp assmebly. I think also there is a "how to" that shows where to look for a broken clutch basket.

You will have to pull the basket, but yes, you will definitely see it if it's broken. Usually, all sections will be broken between the gaps/holes.

OK, strange, the other day i pulled on the basket and no slack. this time when i pulled on it, the basket was 1/2 inch slack and tranny fluid in the oil. nut was backed off.

I pulled everything and cleaned, reset the clutch basket and installed the nut with red thread lock and 150 ft lbs of torgue. let it set for 24 hrs so thread lock would be cured. reinstalled everything set clutch rod, adjusted cable.

Took for test run and all is good.

this is second time the nut has backed off. not sure what to do other than the thread lock.

thanks again

There was a service bulletin for re-torque clutch hub nut for 2007-2008. Not sure this applies to you though. Remove o-ring
