Hello all.
Glad to be a member and look forward to helping where I can and learning enough to hopefully get my dog back on the road

2007 big dog mastiff 117ci baker 6 speed right side drive 26k miles. Don’t know much about the bike before I got it.

This is my first air cooled bike and just learning as I go. Fee as though I’m mechanically inclined but we will see lol

had fluids changed a few months back and had a leak. Took it back twice to the place that changed the fluids and they told me it was overflow. Needless to say I continued to ride.

two months ago my clutch cable broke. I changed it myself and didn’t know the retaining piece that holds the cable end into the transmission only goes one way. Found out much later after weeks of riding and trying the adjustment. :(

started hearing noises in primary and neutralwas near impossible to find and clutch slippage in 3rd and fourth gear.

Decided to tear down the primary and found the hub carrier broke off, it is the original cast junk. When draining the primary fluid it was black and metallic. Not much in the way of large shavings on drain plug but plenty of fine shavings. Found the bearings on clutch inner rod be shot.

sooooo….:.Now I need help.
I live in Wichita and work 20 feet away from BDM. I make a trip there every week or so for something or another and they are not taking in any more repairs at this time as they are too busy on custom builds. So no help there. The other reputable service shop here won’t work on right side drive. My luck !

So my first questions are regarding the shaft coming out of the transmission. Looks as though the seal was no good and fluid is coming from the transmission shaft into primary. When draining transmission barley anything came out and what did was black and thick lol. I have about 1/8 play in shaft in and out laterally. Is it possible I can only change the bearing that’s right there by the clutch? Not sure I can do the whole transmission myself.

What bearings should I buy for the clutch basket and the transmission shaft?
Any certain brand of seals?
was thinking I would go with a good billet hub carrier?
I need new clutch plates and should I go with upgraded components here as wel as pressure plate and diaphragm?
Any help is appreciated

Not sure what all I should do as I’m at this point and need help. Afraid to pull transmission so hopefully I don’t need to do anything but that one bearing and seal.

thanks for reading and any help is appreciates

One of the old ones.
Hman will set you straight-I’d also recommend you give a call to Eric (Th3Infamous1 at HDM, inc. (Lyons, KS—620-680-0395). I think Harry would agree very few know more about sources for rebuilding a Big Dog transmission, as well parts needed for your clutch repair. Eric works hard to serve our Big Dog community. Unhappily, it sounds like your bike will need extensive work—good that you’re near expertise and have some mechanical skills. Get an online manual, too……this Forum can and will help you every step of the way. On the plus side—do it right and you’ll not have to worry about it again.

Well I figured as much. Was just hoping that maybe the front bearing being shot there would allow it to move in and out that much
Well if I was in your situation I would be shipping my transmission to Barnes Performance Cycles. I am pretty sure if you have 1 bad bearing there’s more bad to come if you don’t get it rebuilt. Just another .02
