I just inherited a 1999 Vintage Sport. It was purchased new in 1999 by my father and has been in his collection since. The bike is in almost perfect condition and only has 3.465 miles on it. It is all original and has the 107 engine in it. It has been plauged with problems since he purchased it. I was strippped down and gone through tire to tire to fix all the problems and is now running great except for two problems that I cant get fixed.

First problem is when riding it if I roll the throttle open smoothly the bike goes pretty smooth except you can feel a little hesitation through the rpm range. If if crack the throttle open to pass etc the bike starts to cut out and seems like it will stall out plus backfires really bad until I get off of the throttle and roll it on smooth again. The problem does not happen all of the time but I need it to go away. I have seen it after I wash it and when I havent.

Second problem is after I have been riding the bike for a short amount of time I have an oil drip that begins from under the oil cap, especially after hitting bummps and making turns. I have changed the oil cap from the original and it didnt help.

Any help would be great

first of all please go and do an intro.http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/introductions/

1st problem sounds like the carb needs to be cleaned/adjusted. follow the S&S guide here.Super E & G CARBURETOR TUNING GUIDE

2nd problem sound like a venting issue. I believe your motor vents through the backing plate mounting bolts for the air cleaner. pull off the air cleaner/backing plate and make sure the bolts have open passages through the middle of them.

The bike has been looked at by several mechanics in the last 12 years and this is the first time I have heard anything about a venting issue. Ill check it and see, that is if I know what Im looking for

the venting bolts are the big ones that screw into the heads. one in each top corner. if the motor isn't venting then it will build up pressure and that has to go somewhere. if its not the bolts then it could be the breather gear/read valve that is in the cam chest. yours will most likely be the gear which is the small gear to the left of the cam.

The older one have just a rubber push in oil cap. The rubber wears and oil seeps out. Sometimes you get lucky and find a cap that fits tight. The throttle issue is just a fuel pump adjustment. Some are hard to get all the hesitation out, but should be able to make it much better.

I thought the same thing but since he said he put a new one on, I recommended the other possibilities.

If adjustments on the accelerator pump doesn't fix the hesitation, throw a rebuild kit (accelerator pump only) in it. Should be able to get it for less than $30. Those can go bad at times.

Find someone who has an ultrasonic cleaner for the carb while it is off. Best way to make sure the carb is clean.

Thanks for all of the help, the bike is in like new condition with only these two litte hicups. Like numerous bikes in my fathers collection it doesn have many miles on it for being almost 12 years old (3,465 original). It runs like a scalded dog. My plan is to put new exhaust, handle bars and get it painted in the next couple of months. It is a great bike to rip around the mountains with
