585 Cam Install on '09 K9

Cam swap update:
The Postman and I took our K9's for about a 250 mile ride today with the new .585 cams.
The cam makes the engine have a little more of a "Po-ta-to" sound while at idle. Riding 2-up with my wife I got 45 miles per gallon on the first 100+ miles, and then got 41 miles per gallon on the second 100+ miles. There feels like a noticeable increase in low end torque which was exactly what I was looking for in the cam swap. I enjoy cruising down the road in the 55 to 65 mph zone, and I rarely wind the engine past 3500rpm before shifting. No increase in valve train noise, and overall I am very happy with the cam choice. We were riding the hills of Tn. in the Rock Island area, some areas are very steep and sharp curves. Performance is exactly what we hoped for.

Bowhunter, not to rain on your parade but, when I do a cam, I usually remove the tappet blocks to have access to the cam from the hole In block where the tappet blocks mount. Why? Because I check for cam end play by installing the cam, mounting nose cone and new gasket. I then use a feller gauge to check end play. I add or remove shims for proper end play. I understand that you measured the cams length so you would assume that the shims would be the same. But if the cam you removed was not shimmed properly to begin with or the bearings seated, or ware etc., you would have improper cam end play.

I have had cams walk which intern causes the cam lobes to ware improperly from the load not being centered on the cam lobes from the tappet rollers. There is more work involved, but I feel doing it this way is the best way to preform this swap.
Could you post a "how to" w/ pics on these additional steps for those of us less inclined?

Sounds just like what I want. Thanks

For those of us new to the Big Dog mod addiction..."what is the cost of the 585 cam upgrade if you do-it-yourself?"

What is the cost of a 600 Cam upgrade with new lifters and appropriate accessories (i.e. compression) if you do it yourself?

I could no more do-it-myself than fly on-my-own but needed a base line figure from the experts. I would really like to get the .600 cam set up one of these days.

what bike do you ride? a lot of the bikes are set up to just change out the cam including the 600. the cam of your choice can be purchased for 200.00 or . depends on your model and year...

.585 cam in 08 EFI

Nice post. I am considering a .585 cam install in my EFI 08 K-9. My question is, am I going to need to re-program the fuel injection with this upgrade? If so, I am not sure who would have software in my area?

I am planning to get the 585 cam from Wood installed for my 117 cui in a 06 Mastiff, porting the channels, stronger springs, owning the pistons, valves.
Currently running a big radius from V&H and a K&N forcewinder aircleaner and a shorty G carburator.
Has anyone a clue what differnence it will make?
What is the gain?
Thanks in advance

Oh no,

you need the S&S or BDM cam cover gasket.

The HD cover style will not help you - got two of them

Okay, got the impression here that guys got them from the HD dealership but I'll go as you say. More waiting paying and waiting for shipping. ARG! Thanks man.

I did get my gasket at hd dealer. I took mine in and they matched it up. Not sure what application they had it listed for but they had it.

You have a HD part number for that? Assuming your Mutt has the same engine as my Mastiff. I went in for the exhaust gaskets and the have no cross reference system, just HD part listings.

Sorry I do not. They just matched up the gasket with the used one I brought in.
I assumed it was a Harley gasket. Maybe it wasn't and they just had it.
