maybe a stupid question, but to check the solenoid contacts do i take off the three phillips screws on the end of the starter? the right side

all right my friends thanks to you all i did get her started. took the starter solenoid apart and sanded all the contacts down. They really didn't look that bad, but that was the difference. Now when I get her all back together seat still off I go to fire her up and it smokes from the terminals. I let off the start button. rechecked the terminal tightness. HIt it again and a little smoke, but she fires right up. Is this normal? I rarely fire her up with the seat off so i don't know. What do you all do to make sure the terminals stay tight. Seems like mine get loose after one start up and I am assuming the smoke is from the poor connections. thanks again.

Glad you got it started but not too sure about the smoke issue. do you see any arcing or the terminals getting glowing red. one guy on here just a while back had a problem with one of the terminals glowing red from heat and it was the ground cable loose on the other end from the battery if I remember right.

NO, no arching or glowing. Just a little smoke more so from the positive terminal. Was thinking maybe from the grease on my fingers or because they were not as tight as they should be. I tightend them down real tight then go to start and after that one try they are a little loose again. Need a real good lock washer or maybe locktight. Don't know will wait for imput.

Any smoke is certainly NOT normal - and a very real concern!

It indicates (1) far too much current flow, or (2) a poor connection that is generating too much resistence, or both.

Personally, I would NOT ride that bike until I was absolutely certain I had found the problem and corrected with it - sounds like you may be dealing with the possibility of fire!

There should be a lock washer on each battery post, just under the nut. It should not loosen after a start or two - it should not loosen until you turn it with a wrench.

just throwing something out here for consideration. could possibly the compression releases be malfunctioning and causing too much drain on the battery to turn over the engine??? sounds more like resistance to me.   by no means, no riding until you find out the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some where in the manual its says do not use lock washers on the starter solenoid.YOU said it smokes could be you have one of those starters with oil in it.Bdm had have a s/b on this. If you get voltmeter check volts at the small wire on the solenoid with the wire disconnected. When you hit start-run button you should have battery voltage good place to start with your new meter. :loony:

chop the smoke came from the battery terminals. Mostly the positive. no arch or glow just puffs of smoke

You really need to get a meter.Or pull the starter sound like a lot of load on the battery to me. Smoke not good unless your a friend of old hippy.

my bad sulconst2, it was your idea to check that out and gas re-iterated it and I need to give credit where credit is due.
Yeah all I did is post a pic.

And the reason mine is with the button right side up... is they flipped it as part of a recall. Actually flipped and moved it.

I have to say thanks again to all who gave me imput and helped out. I want to give a special shout out and thanks to reloader. He came over to the house this evening and went through all my work. So no more smoke. The washer on the battery terminal was grinding down into the lead because I was turning the damn thing down so tight. Reloader thanks again and hope to hook up with you and ride a bit over the bike week. Thanks again to all I am very greatful for this site and the willingness to help out a fellow biker.

:2thumbs:
