Going to put some maintenance items in my cart, suggestions?

So I'm going to get some maintenance done on the 02 Pitbull that I just got and start a folder of maintenance works, mileage it was done, etc like I do for all my vehicles. It has about 5400 miles and the previous owner only put about 500 miles on it so I'm not sure how much he did to it other than a battery from Battery Plus recently. I bought a Battery Tender for it today so that'll stay nice and juiced up.

I was reading the owner's manual last night and it seems it wants EVERYTHING pretty much to be done around the 5k mark. I'm looking at the K&N oil filter, going to order some Amsoil fluids for the motor, trans, and primary, S&S air filter, probably going to just flush the brakes while I'm at it and if it's recommended I can go ahead and just rebuild both master cylinders as I have a ton of free time and the kits don't seem to be too pricey. Also, the fitting from the cable going to the rear caliper I noticed today was a little pitted/rusty and doesn't look so pretty anymore.

You guys got your .02 to throw in for me to clean this thing up and get it up to snuff for riding?

Welcome to the forum Matt. Check the cross over fuel line between the tanks to make sure it is okay. Then pull the screen off of the bottom of the fuel shut off valve. Also look inside the tanks and make sure the tank liner is not flaking off.

Sounds like you got a good plan. Check the DOT date on your tires. Rubber may look ok but be really old. Better safe than sorry.

You might wanna load up on some of those blue rubber gloves, (Harbor Freight or friends that work in the hospital) and some good metal polish and good wax or that kind of stuff. Also maybe collect some soft cloth ,(I like old t shirts and flannel cloth) . You'll spend a lot of time shinning that baby up !! Try not to grin too awfully big as you ride past the babes !

I do have TONS of microfibers and chemicals as I'm super ocd about keeping at least my weekend car clean, but am using up the last of my 8 year old mothers aluminum polish as I haven't really had any aluminum to keep polished in forever.

I was going to go by Harbor Freight today and get a couple items but I'll definitely get some of the gloves. I want a bike jack but I dunno if I can trust the one Harbor Freight sells.

There any brands/products you guys like for aluminum and chrome polishing that is usually available at the big parts store chains?

My brother has the Harbor Freight jack and it seems to be okay. It might fit under your Pitbull fine, but not sure as i haven't tried it under my 02 Pit. I know it's too high to slide under a K9 without a ramp under the front wheel. As for the best polish, ask 50 guys and you'll get 73 different answers. I personally like mothers mag & metal polish best, (since ya can't find their billet polish anymore ), but that's just my opinion.

Don't use microfiber rags on your aluminum, it will scratch. Instead use cotton t-shirts. There are several threads out there on polishing your bike

As learned from Mr Wright ..
I go to fabric store and buy 2 - 3 yards of flanel...(outta T shirts lol). Cut into about 5 x 18 pieces.

And .. rub polish in with a nitrile glove on ..

Buffing ... I use two pieces of flanel..
1st one , I remove bulk of polish . And a very light haze of polish may remain .This one is gets fairly dirty (loaded with polish)
2nd one , pretty clean in appearance. And I do the final buff . Bling!! .
When either of these get to loaded to work properly i move the buffing rag to the 1st stage polish remover and get new piece to final buff with .
I go thru maybe 5 or 6 on one reshine.

Just for ref . I been using Adam's..(haven't ventured beyond that).

Painted surfaces .Meguiar's Ceramic ... Wallmart etc....

Ah, had never heard of using old tshirts or whatever for work with aluminum, but then again, all of my toys thus far have always been painted, not raw, polished, etc aluminum. Wal Mart across the highway from me has 100% cotton flannel for $7.99 a yard. There is also another fabric store around here somewhere, I'll have to stop in and see what they've got. Thanks for the heads up, I would have never known.

Are they throw away pieces or can a separate wash actually get the polish and black gunk off?

just toss the dirty ones in the trash, They're not worth the time to run through the wash and dryer. 8 bucks isn't much for the size of material ya get. If you get a pretty pattern on that flannel, you can "maybe" convince your wife or significant other to help ya shine that baby up ! (! guess I haven't been getting the right pattern, because my wife doesn't want anything to do with my bike
