I'm assuming the EHC is new? Sounds like a bad EHC, or something is grounding out. Either way a real bitch to track down. Are the symtoms similar to what you had before you changed the EHC? It'd be nice if you had another 2004 nearby to try that EHC in it. I'll be out in AZ until Oct 13th. If you don't get it sorted by then just PM me and I'll take a ride up and see what's what. Where did you get the EHC? Here's what I'd do: Take off the tank and unplug every connection you can get to. Turn on the bike and see what you get. From there, turn off the bike, and one connection at a time, plug them in and test. Will the bike start?

maybe could be something simple as the control board in the right hand switch housing. no start no run.

to test
under the tank disconnect the right hand control connector (13)
turn on the key
put in nuetral
using a grounding light, ground the red wire (run)
then ground the green wire (start)
should start the bike
