Holy shit! The valve guide is clearly shot and the lifter were due. Does that make you feel better. :D Plust you get to upgrade while your in there. I had the same thing happen on my 03 Chopper. Supposedly you can pull the tube out but I sent mine back to the factory and the brazed it back in there.

when mine broke i positioned the tube back in place with an offset needlenose then threw a screw into the tube to clamp it in place.

You guys "ain't" going to believe this!!!:eek::eek:

My vent tube is busted and most likely the culprit to the sound I was hearing. The tube is just laying down on the tunnel inside the tank. I can't frigging believe it.:rant:
I pulled almost a perfectly good motor down for nothing.

I can't believe this is happening. Thanks MARV (I think!).

Holy shit Ray!! If you would have ran out before you got home you would have caught this. Shit that sucks!!!!

Wow -- nice pics though and since ya got it open, work on all that ya can!

Lesson for us all -- not all bad noises come from the motor

By the looks of that rear valve, maybe this was a blessing in disguise. If that valve were to drop, or bind up, there wouldn't be much of that motor left to salvage.

Shit :bang: Shit :bang: Shit :bang:, but one cannot assume that the breather tube alone was the culprit. Looking at that rear exhaust valve, anything could have been rattling in there. With 60K on that motor, New head, cam, Lifters / Blocks and valve adjustment may be just what it needed to be road worthy again. You know it will be ready for at lease another 60K with this top end refreshing. Or on till the breather tube breaks again :loony: Just trying to make you feel good Ray :D. On the other hand, maybe all you needed to do was to take a look at the primary like Lee said and tighten up the chain a bit. :bang: Hang in there buddy I am sure you are going to love your new motor :flag:

Little update

I got the heads in the mail from Little Boo yesterday and this morning took them down to my favorite mechanic. He swapped out the CR's for me. Took all of 5 minutes.

Here are some pics of the two sets of heads. The newer ones look brand new and have the better springs.
Cylinders cleaned up real good with a little bit of honing. Still waiting on the rings to arrive, he expected them today. I should have them back with rings fitted in a couple days.
Expect to start putting it all back together by Tuesday.

You can see the leaking valve guide clearly here. Good thing I took it apart I guess. :D

Hard to believe that head on the right is polished!

Ray, Are you going to pull the spring on that bad valve so we can all see what kind of wear you have on the valve stem and guide? After having a valve break off mid stem, I'm kinda interested in seeing how your TP Rocker boxes performed. Of course mine had less than 10K miles, but still, you should not have that kind of wear from a motor that has been well cared for.

Ray,

I'll be back in town next week. If you want to put a few breakin miles on the new top end, give me a call.

Damn Ray, that is crazy!

But I can tell ya, when that vent tube breaks loose...cuz mine did exactly like yours, it is noisy as hell!

My dealer removed it for me to solve the problem.

Ray, I read on a thread yesterday that you are putting your bike back together. How's it going? I got the motor on mine back together last night. When I get home today, I'll put the tanks and exhaust back on and fire that mother up! :whoop::cheers::whoop: Good luck with yours too! :2thumbs:

I got the pistons and rings installed last night but couldn't put the cylinders on myself. I don't have a ring compressor. I tried though. Should have it together this afternoon and fire it up.
I've done a series of step by step pics for a top-end How To.

Glad you got yours together.
