Open Primary vs. Closed Primary

I saw the writing on the belt but wasnt sure if it was all baker. Thanks, I love the sound of them. Do they take weight off the left side of the bike?

Looking forward to retirement
My problem was, I had replaced the primary gasket 12-15 times. Every time I would romp on the throttle the torque would mess another seal up and drip drip drip. I went with the BDL with a Primo 1 7/16" offset disk. BEST THING I EVER DID TO THE BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a closed belt on one bike and a closed chain on the other.
I've had friends that went open belt -- damn thing sounded terrible. -- Every time he'd stall we throw quarters at him to tell him to change to the rinse cycle (sounded like a washing machine)

Given what I'v eexperienced with belt vs chain, I'll take a chain every time -- I've snapped 3 or 4 belts on the close belt system -- never snapped a chain.

Changing the fluids -- no big deal really.
46K and I've needed to adjust the chain once and barely == probably could have let it go.

Bottom line -- Do what makes you happy with the bike both its performance and looks

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I by no means have the mechanical skills nor the tools required to tackle a job like changing over to a open primary. My question is, and just have never thought to ask my scooter mechanic, about what would the $$$$ cost be just for the labor to change over to open??

If you look at Baker, I would budget for $3.5 to 4K and find a friend to install it!

There are some very talented individuals around you.

I know that this thread is rather old, but I have a Baker on order. No one in the Tulsa area will install. So I will tackle it with out an issue. Cannot wait to get it installed and out for a ride. Love the sound and looks...

The Baker unit is a peice of cake to install and comes with very detailed instructions. Oh, probably one of the best looking belt drives out there.

The Baker is a nice setup, not the best or nicest looking but Karata's are very hard to come by. Install is straight forward, I suggest checking alignment without loosening tranny mount bolts (your alignment should be good as is). Also be patient with the OBS, it can be a PITA to install. Good luck and post up some pics when you've got it done.. :old2:
