RIP Gen 1 kit problem on 06 K9

Hello all, my name is Chris and I am in England. I apologise for this very long thread in advance! I have owned my K9 for 14 years and 2 years ago replaced the wire plus kit with a complete RIP Gen 1 kit and a new ignition module. The bike ran fine but I always had battery issues (ie not cranking fast enough). After speaking to friends in the USA who were running lithium batteries on their Dogs and Harley's, and had had no problems, I bought a Noco lithium battery and my dog spun over like a mother and started straight away! An hour later I went to start her in anticipation of a mega ride and she wouldn't start. She cranked over, I got a momentary flash of neutral, oil and hi beam lights for an instant then they went out. I had no lights on the ignition module. The horn, turn signals, brake lights, headlights all worked apart from I couldn't dip the main beam. After getting in touch with BDM they suggested I had probably fried the ECU as lithium batteries spike their voltage and Big Dog wiring doesn't like them (I must be the unlucky one!) So I purchased a new ECU which I've recently fitted and it's exactly the same. She cranks but no spark so there must be no power getting to the ignition module. Assuming this ECU is ok, there must be another issue. I'm looking into whether the momentary switch (a little grey plastic box with a bunch of wires coming out of either end) may be the culprit, but haven't been able to find one to buy in order to eliminate that. I've checked all the wiring for loose wires/breaks, the headlight bulb is good and now I'm losing the will to live. I have been reading through the forum and you seem like a friendly knowledgeable bunch of guys, so I am hoping someone may be able to throw some light on this! Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hello. Welcome from Southwestern Virginia Highlands USA! Sorry for your troubles. When I bought my '08 BigDog Mastiff, I replaced the EHC, rotor, stator, voltage regulator, battery (Deka ETX20L), and added a 40amp circuit breaker from the VR to the battery and 20amp circuit breaker from the battery to the EHC. I keep a low voltage battery tender when not riding. Seems to be working fine. I hope you get it running again.

There is so much misinformation about lithium batteries. Sorry but that is nonsense, they do not spike voltage. Clearly that was not your issue. I’ve had the same battery for over four years and it’s an EFI too.

I’m not completely clear what device you are referring to, possibly the circuit breaker?

My advice is to go through the wiring with a multi meter and follow the power from ignition down to the coil. Don’t guess, or listen to folks guess of tell you what their problem was.

Hi Jwooky,
My dog is carburetted, I will try to attach a picture of what I think is called the momentary switch (may be called something else). There is no power going to the ignition module. I have just removed the tach ring as it's the last thing to try, and I find part of the circuit has burnt out. I plugged in the old tach ring (previously removed as some of the led's were out) and now I get a neutral light and an oil pressure light which stays on as it's supposed to. I am thinking a new tach ring will sort part of the problem out but there is still no spark.

The part in your post comes with the RIP Conversion kit. Contact the guys at Bigdog.net to find out what it's purpose is. I don't think it has anything to do with your ignition problem. This is a diagram of your bikes electrical system with info on how the bike operates. Go to pg 29 for the ignition system to help you troubleshoot.
I'm guessing of course, but if your run/off switch is not working the EHC never gets told to come on. Like I said it's a guess but your ignition switch is working because you do get power to other circuits. So you replaced the EHC and the ignition sw works which leaves only the wireing, run/off button or the ign module itself. The start pcb loves to crap out but this video will help you eliminate it as a possible cause.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your input and the links to the wiring diagram and video, there's a couple of ideas I will try. I am in contact with Big dog.net and the module I was wondering about is called a momentary switch, it's not shown on this diagram though. Will let you know the progress!

I just went through the same issue you have on my 04 Ridgeback.. I just bought the bike 6 months ago, it came with a new RIP kit, DYNA 2000I ignition and a lithium battery. The tach didn’t work so I bought a new one and installed it, everything on the bike worked as if it was new. I went to start it and the neutral, oil, high beam lights on the tach ring stopped working and the bike wouldn’t start, no spark. I actually saw smoke come out from the tach/speedo housing in the area of the led’s. I double and triple checked wiring and the right pcb. I thought the module was bad, installed a new one, same issue was present. I thought the momentary switch was bad, borrowed a known working one and I still had no power to the coil. I had power from the right pcb to the momentary switch but no power coming out. I’m a stickler for having everything work as is should so I bought another tach ring, installed it and replaced the lithium battery with a AGM battery and low and behold I had power to the coil, buttoned everything up and I have had zero issues since.

No one has ever said that they were happy about the rip kit. There’s a reason they went out of business. Sure some people are lucky and it works for a while , until it doesn’t. If it was me it would rip that crap out and redo the electrical like it should be. Sure it’s going to take some time and money but, when you are done, you have a reliable system and a dependable bike for many years to come. Best of luck with it.

I just like my Freedom
Ive got a RIP on the 04 Chopper. Have not had one related issue. BDM still stocks and sells them. The old Wires Plus is long gone...early 2000's I think. I had the WP in the Pit for about 8 yrs before the magic smoke left. Replaced with Electronix Box from WSW. As it was an early unit it had issues. So ya just never know with electronics.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for this, seems the same deal I have! I've been out in the garage fooling with the wiring all day and have got to the point now where I have power to the ignition module but the module has no led's alight - I have no idea how, as a few hours ago I still didn't have power to the thing! But I have been fooling around with the tach ring, which is still burned on part of it. Now I'm not sure if it's the tach ring, the ignition module or maybe even the crankshaft sensor. I guess more investigation before I start buying parts.

Thanks Snuffy I've spent a fair amount of time and money on her already, rode her no problems at all for 7 years from the day I got her then she kept just shutting off randomly, so bought a wireplus kit and rewired her, worked fine for 2-3 years maybe a bit longer then the ECU took a dump, so then bought the RIP Gen 1 Kit fitted all the new harness etc and she worked beautifully for 2 years. Had to replace the tach ring and crankshaft sensor but had weak battery problems ever since I replaced the original battery. A lot of my friends here and in the states run lithium batteries on their Harley's and dogs, so I figured I'd get one. Apparently not such a clever move as it started like a mother one time and the whole thing took a dump. Now I hear some people have had problems with lithium's and some haven't. Go figure.

Hi Hman,
Hopefully you can see my reply to Snuffy, I used to have a wireplus on my dog too as you say you never know with electronics, what one bike likes another one doesn't!
