Starter Click, Click, Click

Energy One
No my lights stay on when trying to start i put a HID setup in to help with AMP draw but have been thinking of doing a light kill switch. also i was told at dealer i bought it from that the starting issue was common on the bigger motors and i heard the 02 didnt have the relife valves that it was one of the problems but do not know. The BDM site has back to 03 manules on line but not the 02 for me to read through and my local BDM dealer not very helpfull about getting me one

Guys...need some help here. My 2004 Mastiff is doing the click click click... so I tried taking the cover off and polishing up the contact points. No help... I checked the Battery voltage and it is 12.9 volts. I tried jumping (just in case) to no avail.

I can hear the Click in what sounds like the front part around the motor. When I hit the start button the head light will go down (even when getting 13.8 V while jumping it off).

Anyone have anything else I could try? I hate to start part switching blindly.

Figured out the clicking is the compression releases (i think) therefore I am back to the starter after checking everything else I can think of...Anyone have any good locations that sell them?

Yes that click from the motor is your electronic compression releases.

On the starter... I think its a standard spyke starter that you can use... Ray and Sul have linked them before.

you got an 04 so should be a standard softail type starter with the bolt on jackshaft. personally i'd pull it and have it rebuilt at a local alternator shop. should be 1/2 the price and sure to fit.
I was wondering about that... but is kinda scary when you see some of the pics from Ray.

Guys finally figured it out...the wire inside the selenoid was broken. I resoldered it together and runs great. Here is a photo of it in case anybody else has the same issue.

Great thread.... my starter is different though

1997 Big Dog. Built back when their choice of components tended to vary from bike to bike. Think my solenoid needs the same kind of a clean up described here but unfortunately what I have looks nothing like the pictures previously posted.

What I have does look like it's user serviceable and I was thinking about putting in a slam button while I have it apart if someone happens to know the kw rating for my bike. Pic should be attached (I hope)

For the record, this actually started immediately after installing a new battery which is probably just an interesting co-incidence. All the connnections look tight and clean. I've noticed a lot of conversations in various threads about the starter motor "dragging" for a second or two when you first hit the button. This bike has done this since day one and is an 80CI S&S evolution. It does have Edlebrock high performer heads and I don't know what the compression is. It's not anything that's kept me awake with worry.

At the same time the solenoid issue cropped up, I also started noticing a high pitched whine that corresponds to motor RPM. I'm a little worried that the starter gear is not fully disengaging after the motor starts although I'm guessing something would have fried by now, right?

I would value comments and advice on how to procede.
