Thankful to make it back home!!!!

Hey Guys,
I took the scooter out for a little ride today and was aboutt 50 miles from home on the interstate running about 70 when it kind of hick-up backfired. Then I noticed the tach lights were flashing on and off , the speedo bouncing up and down, like it was losing power, then come back on, and run fine a while. I headed straight home , saying a prayer, Please Lord let me make it home!! It sputtered like that on and off all the way home every seven or eight miles. I had a feeling if I ever turned it off it might not start again. In between the little backfire and the speedo and tach flashing it seemed to run fine and It did start again after I turned it off in my driveway. Could anyone please point me as to what I should start to check. I thought cam sensor as I was getting closer to home, but I know you guys would proably point me straight to the issue without me wasting a bunch of time on it. Possibly , hopefully something simple!!!!

Thanks for your help,
Ray :bang:

you've already done the wire plus, right? bad coupling?? intermittent sounds like a break in continuity.

or maybe tank liner.

Yes sir already done the wire plus, and that was one of the thoughts , maybe/possibly a wire connector is coming lose. I'll check the wires in the connectors and make sure they are all still tight.

Thank you ,,
havea great weekend,

I never thought about the actual ignition switch going out. I was going to look back through Jake's instructions on the install and see which wire goes to the speedo and tach and check it out for any issues loseness or anything else.

And yep it a good feeling to make it home and not be stranded on the side of the road ,

Thanks for everyones input ,,, I'll let ya know when I figure it out,,

Yes Sir, that is a another thought about the battery. I actually didn't think of it because the battery is almost brand new on it ?????? Yep that makes sense though,,,

Thanks , Ray

I just went out and plugged the tender up on it.. I tryed to start it and it fired right up as usual. I tryed to keep the tender on it while it was cold and I wasn't riding much at all. Since it is warmed up I haven't put the tender on it at all. I'll let it get it back on the green light on the tender and try it again , close to home of course. That was a bad feeling I had yesterday the instance it sputtered and I saw the gauges flashing.I saw at least I had a good shoulder on the road to get over on,,,, thinking of getting my tralier 40 miles away,,,,pushing is not an option,,,,I had my phone ,,,,, ah that went through my mind in a couple seconds,,, then it like "Help me get home Lord!!!!!!". And He did , thankful for that too.

Is there a test I can do to test the voltage regulator ,, without just getting one and hoping that is the issue? I will search prior threads ah haa!!!

Thanks everyone ,,,
Thanks to everyone that has served in our military whenever, whereever , my family appreciates your service. My wife's father retired from the Air Force. Cool little thing he did way back when. He lied about his age to join the service to go to Germany. He never finished jr high school. I want to tell you folks he was one of those special people we are blessed to get to know sometimes in our lifes, he was a real man too. His name was Robert Durham and he retired a Sargent. He was a big man as well, with a big man's voice that demanded respect when you heard it. He treated me like one of his kids. He was referred to as "Bull Durham" in the service, and a great man he was till his death several years ago. Like I say one of those special people we sometimes get to know in life..

Put a meter on the battery posts while it's running and make sure your getting close to 14 volts DC to the battery while it's running. If not then your charging system isn't working correctly. That's a quick check!

Did the meter check after reading through the thread on checking it. The battery even though had not been on the tender in a while read 12.5 with the key not in it. I turned the key on and it barely dropped. I started it, and it started great, at about 3 grand on the tach it read 14 ish. So being daring as I am I strapped the helmet on an went for a ride , promising wife I would stay close by and if it acted up, I would get straight back home, be ready with truck and trailer.. I had let it run a bit and warmed up and did not see any issues. About 2 1/2 miles from the house it started sputtering and flashing again, so straight back home, and it did the same as it did yesterday. Got home with the tach lights not working, of course the speedo is doing anything cause it is not moving. I checked it with the meter again and it still was reading high 13 -14 when I reved it up barely. The second I shut it down I checked it and it read 13 and would restart with no problem. When it was running the red light was on,,,,, but I didn't notice or think to watch it when it acted up,,,,So back to the drawing board....... thinking I need to check all the wireing from from the WP back to the switch and beyond .....

I do know all the wires in the frame are protected by heat strink,,,,

I am kinda thinking I need to see if the red light goes out or flashes when it acts up without getting all the wires upset from where they are resting in very confined spaces ,,,, at least a place to start maybe ,,,,,and check the wiring under the cover where the switch is located ,,,

Still thank you again "everyone" for you time and assistance,
and thankful I am not on the side of the road waiting for trailer in the heat,,,,, been there ,, done that,,,,that really (I can say this word cause our pastor said it from the pulpit a few weeks back) "Sucks"!!!

you need to get thinks cleared out of way so you can get to wiring, start bike and go around shaking and moving wires one by one and see if you can get it to act up.

Pull wiggle test goes a long way in solving intermittent problems

I think I am making some progress with ya'll's help. I had to cut a little grass this morning and had to move the scooter out to get the mower out. I was not in a rush then , and I remembered that about he time I turned it off it started acting up again. I got the key and put it the "on" position. No neutral light or nothing!!!! I wiggled the Wire plus couplings and the lights came on , but then would go back off. I unplugged the couplings I was moving to see if the pins were lose and they looked fine. When I shook them just a little all the lights would come on or back off again, so I am thinking I need to look up and see which one of these wires is going to the switch. I can't remember off the top of my head. I think it is something simple it is just tracking down which wire it is that is causing the problem. Maybe I'll have it fixed by the time these Locusts are gone..:D

Thanks again for everyone's time and help,,,

Ok, I tryed to work this morning after I got off work finishing up a tree that fell , cutting it up, and between the C kade As swarming me all up in my face and the heat, put the chainsaw back in the toolbox and came home, cooled down a bit.
I then went out in the garage and wiggled wires and think I found the one causing the Flashing and sputtering . On the # 1 plug the Orange and white/ Orange seemed to be the one. I really didn't find anything wrong with the connections and I looked it over good, but made sure the plugs snapped back together good where I here the "Snap". After that I could not get it to act up..... Will go for a short haul in the future , like short , but at least I know where to look when it goes weird on me again.... Possibly I think , like I did have it really clean , polished up , and there are a few C kade As spattered on it..... could have been having an ugly bug thing ...

Thank you " Everyone" including Jake for your help in this matter helping me get my scooter barking again,,,
