throttle cable broke yesterday:confused: , luckily i was near the house, after we road all day. anyway, iron lightning gave me two 40" cables, throttle and return. i cant get it, i feel like i need another inch or so (thats what she said). so, does anyone know if this the correct lengths? I cant imagine Iron Lightning would give me the wrong lengths, so its probably just me, although you would think this is something simple....... anyone have experience with this? 2005 ridgeback..... Please help! thanks for the good ride we had tuesday guys, thumper, f-okie......

Did you compare them to the original ones yet?
Have you pulled the grip and pulled out the old one's yet?
You will need three hands but you can due it just be careful and don't loose either of those ferrels and be careful of the brake light switch wire in there. Don't pinch it.

There are plenty of pictures on this site of others that have done it already.

getting it done is not the problem. im about to pull them out and compre them to old ones, see if there different lengths. i was just curious if someone had access to the lengths of the cables. but i'll know real quick when i pull them off and compare side by side.

38" on my 05 chop but 34" fits just doesnt go under the tank. as long as the lenght of the actual cable is close your good.

Well I would make sure all the ferrels and things are seating as well as them seating in the slot on the bottom of the cotrols. Also ensure you have the push and pull on the right side.

You'll get it!!

can anyone answer this, where the throttle cables meet at the grip, is that suppose to be top dead center? with my throttle cable hooked up, my grip is rolled forward an inch, if i roll it back, to match the other one, its allready opening up my carb, this leads me to believe my throttle cable is an inch short. this would put my grip back to stock position, and not have my carb allready opened up. an inch is all i need...........

Ok mato, lets see if we can get you going here. The length of the cable has noting to do with throttle adjustment. Hell you could have a 10 ft long cable and run it around your forks a few times and it would still work.

Look at this picture and you will see the exposed cable and it's only an inch or two till it get's locked into the carb throttle actuator.

So what you should do it first hook your cables to your grip BEFORE hooking them up to the carb and then ensuring all the little sleeves are inset properly go to the carb end of the cables and pull on both ends checking to see that you have sufficient length in both cables to hook up to your carb throttle piece. Doesn't matter what position the throttle grip is in per say (although it does fit in a groove in the control section).

If the cable is collapsed as MARV said then you CAN slide the barrel pins into the carbs throttle piece. Just ensure you have the push and pull cables on the right side of the carb, easy to visualize if you play with it and imagine opening the throttle and see how it pulls the carb butterfly open.

To make it a bit easier you can remove the screw that holds the cables onto the carb and it will give you a bit more slack to get those little brass barrels onto the cable acturator on the carb.

Then with the cable adjusters start taking out all the slack. I get them to where they are about set then take the slack out of the push cable first then set the pull to where you like it.

Have fun

i know i sound slow, but thanks for helping. were on the same page, i hooked up everything starting at grip, all the slack is out, i go down to carb, and as you say RAY, i TRY to pull on the cables as i should have sufficient length to hook up. I dont. i cant pull enough cable out to reach where i need to hook up to carb. im slacked out! and out of cable! going to get 42" to see if thats it. this is to simple of a task, for me to be having these problems. its gotta be that the throttle cable is a little longer, mines broke so its hard to get an exact measurement. raywood i've really tried everything you have said, even down to taking off the bracket that holds the cables on the carb. like you said. its just not even close.

Sorry you are having such problems but just to make sure.......... Did you turn the barrel adjusters in the right direction? You should be scrwing them all the IN to give you cable slack (collapsening them).

Not to insult your inteligence but it's a mistake I've made in the past!!

ya, there in, no threads showing
Well then maybe the dealer gave you the wrong cables.
If you have the package you could call Nelson and ask him to verify the stock number for you.

But they are pretty generic with the exception of sleeve length.

Good luck

Hey junior:lol: Is it possible you have the cable running under the grip? Are both cables same length?
