membership advice; oil leak

Looking for membership advice please;

Here is the back ground : My 05 chopper had 2000 miles on it and I just took it in for all the Service Bulletin and recall work which none was ever done.

The dealer says by the way your clutch has known issues and in addition WE got BDM to pay for tear apart and replace shaft, cone washer and new spring with all associated o-rings. ( this included new oils for primary and tranny.) Great I'm happy

Here is my problem; I now see a spot or two of oil that has dripped on my garage floor after each time I ride it for an hour or more which I did not have before. (I do acknowledge that I previously noticed the under and back side of the starter was damp with oil residue. but not enough for dripping on the floor.)

I called the dealer and he said; "yes we noticed your starter was damp and those 05's had known issues of the starter having an incorrect finish on the shaft and oil leaks by and into the starter. BDM won't pay for it because your out of warranty. You have to by a new starter . your looking at $ 450. you better get it replaced or you'll get stranded."

I also know that I saw two different oils on the floor one was motor oil and one was gear oil. you can see and smell the difference.

Any suggestions; especially on the motor oil leakage. Is this true you really have to replace the starter with a new one to fix this oil leak if it is in deed coming from the starter.

thx

Well if you have two oils on the floor and you know one is motor oil then I would look at the oil line fittings under the oil tank. On my 05 they were replaced a couple times due to bad crimping by the supplier of the oil lines. Was a common problem way back them. Also ensure your oil plug is sealed and not leaking. If you are doing your own oil changes then before you replace the plug wrap it with some Teflon tape and you will be good to go.

Now for the starter. Back in 04 when the this whole new design came out starters were a major problem. It's been all fixed now but a lot of folks went through a lot of hassles. (I've had 10 of them replaced  )

So if you still have the original starter then you do probably have to get it replaced. The new ones have different seals and venting and don't seem to be a problem any longer. Another thing they tried was venting the primary but that didn't seem to fix anything.

I would check your power cable on the starter and see if it's oil saturated. This was always a good indication of leakage. Also, if it is you will notice it smoke when you start the bike.

For a replacement I would just get one from Shovelkicker on eBay. He always has them for sale and for a lot less than what your dealer wants. Your dealer will most likely get it you one from BDM and they are just re-built units and that is what is on eBay.
Several threads on here where members have ordered starters from Shovel.

But before you do all that I would thoroughly clean the bike and go for a ride and then come back and inspect and and find out exactly where it's leaking from.

Have fun,
Ray

thx ray

yes I believe it was untouched from it's original delivery,. the bike had 1700 miles on it when i bought it off the guys living room floor.
I thought at the time this was a good thing. no one ever messing with it.
but i'm finding out this model had a lot of bugs. But I do love that thing.]

I know you are experinced on these and appreciate your help. I hope i don't get anymore surprises.

thx again

There are a few other things to watch out for on the 05. Do you still have the white faced speedometer? You should also have a wide mount for it instead of the thinner one. This reduces the vibration.

Recalls in the technical section here for you reading pleasure. Fwd swingarm bolts should be replaced.

Yell if you need anything though.

I did the clean up today and rode it around; then put her up on a jack. The only place I found oil was on the starter face plate which is on the side where the starter bolts into the primary. You could see a small amount of oil seeping downward . I did not see any oil around the power cable. Also no oil coming from the hoses or drain plug.

hopefully I'm on the right track.

I put a brand new piece of sponge maybe 2 x 3 right under where the starter bolts on the primary. I'm going to run it for a few rides and see if I get that sponge to catch the leaking oil. I'll then inspect underneath again. If I don't have any oil residue anywhere else then I figure I got it located.

thx mark

Did you pull back the rubber insulation where the insulation goes into the motor? This is what you will get for a buck if you buy from shovelkicker

The blue rubber that goes into the starter motor pull the rubber back and look for oil here the early bdm starter leaked oil from the primary into the starter creating an oil leak when the bike was on the kick stand. The black rubber insulation on the 05 and newer would crack so most of us used heat shrink as a temporary fix. Chasing oil leaks can be done with dye and a black light to pin point where its leaking.Oil runs down hill and can be deceiving.
