07 K9 Knocking Bad - Suggestions? I'm stumped....

When you did the top end did you ensure there the check valve on the rear breather hose went back in properly?

I'm at a loss here.......on my motor on the rear cylinder there is only a rubber hose with a filter element attached. The front cylinder's rubber hose attached to top of carb. This does make me wonder as I can feel air being pushed out through two of the rear rocker box cover bolts. When engine was tore down the hose and filter wasn't removed from the head.

I just removed the check valve and blew through it. It is installed in the direction to let air pass outward and restrict inward. Is this correct?

Just a thought......would incorrect rocker base gaskets create this problem?

Pull off the air cleaner and make sure crankcase gas is being relieved out the breather hose. If it is then it's time for a compression and leak down test. I looked back briefly and see nothing about a bore or hone of the cylinders?

The cylinders were within .001 for roundness so a bore wasn't done. They were honed and rings file fit per S&S/Mahle specs.

I'm going to pull the check valve and breather line off carb with it running to see if anything is being relieved.

I check both lines simoultaneously and there is no venting coming out the breather lines from either head?

Its been a while maybe marv or dead can tell us? In the pic number 17 if I remember there was a timing of the breather inside the case could be its off a few teeth. http://www.zodiac.nl/instructions/S&SSSW+Engine.pdf

I used Cometic Steel gaskets. They were both identical, I put them on just as the stock ones were configured (Big square hole in middle of gasket facing exhaust). But after going back, I'm realizing that the stock gaskets are flat and Cometic have a rolled edge.

Do you suppose this could be that issue?

I guess I will start with the rear since it appears to be the one not venting out the check valve and blowing air out the cover bolts. :bang::bang::bang:

The rear head needs to be vented the worst out of either of them. Some even plug off the front tube and just drop the rear vent tube under the bike.

It's not the crank being hurt :nono: , it's not the cylinders out of round. :nono: ,

It's NOT BREATHING! It's just blocked off somewhere! :2thumbs:

Thanks, I knew it wouldn't be the crank or cylinders as a problem. I guess the Tequila impaired my vision and judgement on the gaskets (never used cometic before).

Soon as the garage warms up I'm going to take the rear box off and flip the gasket (8 degress out). Suppose to warm up to 27 degrees and I will go for a ride!

And the easy test is to see if any crankcase gases are coming from the rear vent hose. I like to test things before tearing them apart.

The gasket they sent was an RB007 which I have attached a pic. There is no hole in the gasket over the vent hole in the head. Also attached is one of a RB040. It has a hole on both sides of the gasket where the vent hole is located. This looks to me to be the correct one.

Can you or anyone verify which one is correct for the 117" S&S with all S&S top end components? Thanks!

You may want to get verification on that. I've actually used those gaskets before and I think you're right about having the wrong one, but can't tell you for sure. Why don't you call the Big Dog Dealer that sold you the gaskets and get confirmation from them?

I don't deal with my dealer here as the dealership here is a one man band and he has repeatedly screwed stuff and made problems worse on my bike and I always have to redo what he has done. So I do everything myself. I was a 17 year shovelhead rider and did all my own work as well as on my other Harleys. Just learning more and more everyday about these dogs.

I don't deal with my dealer here as the dealership here is a one man band and he has repeatedly screwed stuff and made problems worse on my bike and I always have to redo what he has done. Thanks, You are correct Sir! I tried telling Cometic reps the same thing.

I ended up calling S&S and emailed the pic of the gasket. They stated the gasket I have is for early big bore TC's and to just punch a hole in the gasket over the vent relief hole on the head. So I just did that and now everything is just peachy! Steady 30psi at idle and 40psi at mid range. No more pressure in the oil tank as well. Can feel a good pulse coming out both vent lines at the heads too!

Thanks to all for all the help on this little brain teaser..........goes to show that the dealers of specialty products really do not know crap about their products.

PS. The correct part number for Cometic style gasket as MARV shows is a RB040........
