NEW CAM AND AIR INTAKE

I HAD THE BIG DOG DEALER BY MY HOUSE INSTALL A 600 S&S CAM AND AIR INTAKE LAST WEEK. ALSO HAD BIKE PUT ON THE DYNO. NOW BIKE CUTS OUT AT 3500 RPMS LIKE ITS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AND THEN STRUGGLES TO RED LINE. IT IS MOST NOTICABLE IN FIRST. BIKE IS BACK FIRING LIKE A MACHINE GUN UNDER DECELLERATION. I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALER THIS MORNING AND LEFT IT ALL DAY AND NOW THEY ARE SAYING THEY DONT KNOW WHATS WRONG W IT. ONE OF THEM TRIED TO TELL ME MY IGNITION MIGHT BE SHORTING OUT...??? NAH... DO YOU THINK THE CAM IS OFF A DEGREE? RAN GREAT STOCK WHEN I DROPPED IT OFF, I RODE IT EVERYDAY. THANKS FOR THE ADVISE.

What air intake did they install? Did they remove the bowl vent screw? If you have a high flow intake the bowl vent needs to come out, and the size of the air bleed needs to be increased until you can get past that stumble. The stumble is going to be very similar to hitting redline, but if you back off the gas and roll back into it, can you get past 3500 RPMs?

I can get it past 3500 rpms just hold it wide open and hang on because its going to be rocky. From 4000 to red line it acts like its dragging. Should they not know what to do? I'm just in ahh that they dont know whats going on with it............ sorry getting to the intro now.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust a BD dealer with anything beyond an oil change, and even then I'd double check all their work. You need a guy who has experience tuning a custom setup, and it's doubtful that your dealer has the mechanic you need. Where are you located?

Yah I dont know. Maybe I wil get some more answers tomm.. If need be I'll pick it up and take it to another place. I'll post back and let you guys know. Thanks for the help.

Tell us what jets are in it and if the float bowl vent was removed as suggested (S&S recommends this also). Sounds to me like its flooding out during the transition perioed (2500-3000) but can't tell till you tell us what jets they put in it.
Also, what exhaust are you using? Does it have any backpressure?

74 main w VH pipes..... just picked it up a hour ago from dealer. The mech said he forgot to take out a screw from under the carb. (now there is just a hole there/ nothing to keep out the elements?) I believe that was the bowl vent screw Moespeed was talking about. It seems to run fine now. I'm looking at the dyno print out now and was expecting a little more. Tell me if this sounds right. max hp 100.49 at 5200 rpms and 111.94 of torque.

just watched the video that BikersDream had on you tube. I dont appear to be off much. I did not get the dual ss intake. That is the one I wanted but is was about $900. I got a single and it ran about $300.

Just two little pieces of advice.....

1) All dealers are not the same! Some good and some....let's just say "not so good"! :down:

2) Just take it back to them and tell them too, FIX THE MFer! :rant: :rant: :rant:

If it ran when you came in, there's no excuse why it should run the same of better when it goes out! :nono:

I purchase a brand new 2008 Big dog mastiff special addition approximately six months ago. My carburetor cover was a S&S cover not the usual Big Dog cover. I called big dog and they told be that the cover was S&S because I purchased the motorcycle from California and the big dog cover does not fit California carburetor specifics. Any way they told me the big dog cover will not fit my carburetor. My question is does any one know if the BD cover will fit the S&S cover, and also if any one has one for sale thank you.
