Bigdog quits

Have 04 big dog chopper that quits, lights out, speedo out, after on the road for 10 miles. The key seems to be dead however, the relay by the battery clicks like it should, however no lights on EHC. Let it sit a few minutes, turn key back on and everything fires up, go another 2 miles and lights out again. Replaced relay, bike started up long enough to load in trailer, unloaded bike and it won't power up at all. Is this ultimately a faulty EHC that I have been reading about, and can you get new one from Big Dog. Thanks to all.

How old is the battery?

What's its voltage?

Have you checked the starter solenoid contacts?

I'd check the key switch
Good Advice! :2thumbs: Very strong Possibility!

If it cranks up more than just once and runs fine, I doubt the issue is the solenoid. Also doubtful it's the battery when it stalls out and then won't even try to crank (click!) until it cools down. But hey..... with these BDM electrical systems :loony:
"ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE"! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Make sure your circuit breaker didn't trip & its running the battery down.
Sorry Sub,
Once the circuit breaker trips or the fuse pops the charging system circuit is "not" connected to the battery any longer and CAN'T be the cause of a battery drain. Plus like I stated with Gas above, after it cools down for a few it cranks back up. So what Battery drain is there?

Whisler,
Check out the key switch real thoroughly for loosing continuity! Just turn the key on to where the headlight is on and wiggle the hell out of the key in every direction! Then try and wiggle the "back side" of the key switch assembly also. If light fails or flickers during these quick little test, then the switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

Give this a try and let us know and we can go on from here if need be. :2thumbs:

Same sort of thing was happening to mine, a new EHC is on order. If you suspect yours is on its way, I suggest you get one ordered quickly as the lead time sucks.

Mine would start fine, then crap out while riding...flashers come on, and horn beeps...turn key off then on, bike would start right back up again...then it would continue to happen intermittently.

BDM doesn't even make the '04 EHC anymore. :nono::nonod:

You have to convert to the "newer" style EHC now for those models. :loony:

If that is the case here. I personally, would just go the Wire-Plus route and forget it! :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

Yeah, What Dead said, go with the Wire Plus and put this issue to rest.

I only mentioned the circuit breaker so we would know if the battery was being charged when it does run.

DreadOne... if the circuit breaker is poped, the charging system no longer charges the battery. So at that point, the bike is running everything on the battery, the headlight, ignition, ehc, coil, tails & turns... that drains the battery and then you have battery problems.

You guys kill me!:lol::lol::lol:.... :D

I "AGREE" with what you are both saying! :2thumbs:

But what you're both not getting here is, the owner states the following symptoms:
"Have 04 big dog chopper that quits, lights out, speedo out, after on the road for 10 miles. The key seems to be dead however, the relay by the battery clicks like it should, however no lights on EHC."

So if the bike stalls, why won't it instantly restart or light up the lights?

a) Low or dead battery? Sure
b) Problem in the Key Switch? Sure
c) Problem in the wiring harness, shorting things out? Sure
d) Problem with the "JST" or "D" connector on the EHC? Sure
e) Problem inside of the EHC? Sure

But to have any of the previous issue in direct correlation with the 2nd part of his statement of the failure: "Let it sit a few minutes, turn key back on and everything fires up, go another 2 miles and lights out again."

a) Low or dead battery? Nope! :nono::nonod: (Cooling wouldn't have any affect on "when" you could crank up! It just wouldn't start or even crank possibly, period!)

I think that things were just a little misinterpreted here.

Sorry! :D

We're all good! :2thumbs:
