Brad,
On the rear head, you NEED to leave the 1 way valve in the hose.Just replace the piece of hose with a longer one LEAVING THE VALVE IN.
There's 2 1/4" allen pipe plugs at the rear of the case.... 1 at 90 degrees, the other at 45 degrees.Your choice as to which 1 you want to remove.Put a hose barb in the hole, and a piece of hose, and call it a day.Tell your wife you listened this time.
Hope it works for you.If not the heads are coming off.:bang:
John
Thanks john, I'll take a look when I get home, pull the plug and take it to get a same fit barb and hose to go in its place. Sure hope this works. The summer just started. I'm sure that if this doesn't work, only running more will increase the chance of breaking a guide off and having shit flow into the rest of the motor. I really do appreciate it.

Where ya at on this Brad?
Just got home last night. I'll re-route the vent tubes and bypass the carb like John suggested this weekend. Maybe tonight if I can get the 1/4" plug with a hose fitting. I'm pretty sure John is talking about the 1/4" bolts above the line going from the oil pump to the oil tank. They're just above the oil pump. I did see where a bolt for the pump has backed out a little too. Nothing major there, just needs to be put back with some blue locktite. Hope to get what I need to determine if the heads have to be pulled for new valve guides or not. If I pull the heads, I'll have to bite the bullet and find some S&S rocker boxes and roller rockers as well. About $1000 for the set but I've already spent a lot more than that on a previous failed valve. Don't want to do that again.

Update!!!

Where ya at on this Brad?
Well, I did as John suggested and re-routed my lines to eliminate the chance of oil entering the cylinders via the intake. After about a 30 mile ride....poof. That pit went to smoking like Hippy at a Bob Marley concert. The heads are coming off this weekend. John is going to fix me up on the heads with new valve guides and the bigger valves. Also replacing the TP rocker boxes with S&S. I'm 40 miles from New Orleans and bike week is started today. Sucks but not going to chance it. I'll update with some pics when I get the heads off. Thanks all for your help. Hope to be back up and running in a few weeks.:whoop::cheers:

dont forget to pull the jugs and replace the gaskets down there and maybe even replace the head bolts. I'm sure you know all this. I'm sure John will take care of you.

John did mention to replace the lower gaskets under the jugs and seems like somewhere recently I read about changing out the head bolts when you pull the heads. I've pulled the heads before and not changed them with no problems. Had never heard of this until reading it here in the forum. So, what was the main reason for changing out the head bolts? Does everyone do this?

So, what was the main reason for changing out the head bolts? Does everyone do this? Brad Best answer I can give you is bolt stretch when this happens the head gasket fails. One thing also to remember is to lube thread of the bolt PLUS the top of the head bolt there is metal contact here too!

The dog is down

Well, that poor dog is torn down to the ground. But what the hell. I got my wire plus in a while back and have procrastinated that project. I have all but the negative wires and keyswitch to complete the kit. Also put the Cruise Mate on. John Sachs is going to fix me up with the heads and new S&S rocker boxes. He's also going to bore the carb for a thunderjet. I should be back in the saddle some time in June. Just in time for some summer time trips to anywhere.:whoop::cheers:

Oh yeah, I did notice that the TP roller rockers left an imprint on top of the valve stem that is obviously off center. I'll see if I can get a pic of that for you unfortunates like myself that have the TPs. It wasn't long after I got the bike that I broke a valve mid stem and dropped it into the cylinder. By the way, it was the front cylinder doing all the smoking. :bang:Hope to fix this for the last time. :job:

Update with pics!!

Well guys/gals, once I broke into the head, no doubt that it's a bad valve guide causing it to smoke. But John Sachs has known that from the git go. Here are some pics I took last night. Valve guide wear on the front cylinder exhaust was extreme. I was scheduled to send the heads to John for repair but due to some unexpected expenses, that will have to wait. There's no question that this is a TP rocker box issue. This is the same cylinder that had a valve break off mid stem only a year ago and drop down into the motor causing a catastrophic failure. The Big Dog rep stated they had never heard of a valve breaking like that. They have now!!:job: The only real fix is to replace the TP's with S&S. About a thousand bucks! :spank: I've been looking on Ebay and Craigslist, but no deals there. TP's are cheap to buy. S&S? About 3 times as much, but worth it. IMO, BDM should have recalled the TP's when they found that the geometry of alignment of the roller rockers to the valve stems were not true. My advice to anyone that has an '05/'06 with TP rocker boxes/roller rockers is to get them replaced as soon as you can afford it. I know there are a few, like Raywood, that run the TP's with no issues. Well, he did have a worn valve guide but it just didn't bite him in the ass like they do me. valve guide 004.jpg

OK, here is a test. My 2005 Ridgeback used to do the exact same thing.
It ended up being trashed valve guides.

Go to a big parking lot like Lowe's or Home Depot. Ride in a fairly tight right hand circle, about three loops, and then straighten out and get on the throttle. Mine would puke smoke almost every time that this was done. It would do it in a right hand (Clockwise) circle but not in a left hand. That was how the dealer diagnosed what it was. They tore it down and the valve guides were gone at 2000 miles.

Good luck!

Just as I thought. Just like mine.

I still run the TP boxes, but the dealer changed everything else and put rockers in it that corrected the geometry issue.

I have put about 10,000 miles on it since and it is all good still!
