Speedo Issues

I figured I would make a thread on this as to get other opinions and mainly to put it out in public as to hpefully be able to help others in the future. Here is a question I asked Dead .......

Got a couple questions for ya. Hopefully you can help me out. I have an 04 RB. My speedo just up and quit working. Tach and all indicator lights still work fine just the speed does nothing. Ok when turn key on it does the sweep as it should....crank up and start rolling and the needle NEVER moves. Saw where some where talking about the starting of the bike doing something to the ehc but have never had this be a problem before. Just to check I got going down the road ... pulled in clutch...turned bike off...turned key back on .... let speedo sweep ..... then release clutch and restart bike without using starter .... still no speed on speedo. So .....if the speedo can do the sweep when bike turned on should it still be ok to show speed when rolling? I have yet to pull the sensor to clean and will do when I get home form overseas. Lastly.... it is my understanding that the speedo signal goes thru the ehc but is not controlled by it....is this correct or coulod this be a sign of the ehc beginning to fail? Any and all help is appreciated bud!!!!

Here was Dead's answer......

"it is my understanding that the speedo signal goes thru the ehc but is not controlled by it." You are correct. It's just a pass-through circuit to get it into the wiring harness.

"If" the speedo is doing the correct sweep, then the issue is either in the sensor, like you're already thinking, or it could be in the wiring or the "D" connector on the "input" side of the EHC, from the speedo sensor, NOT the output "D" connector to the speedo/tach.

I think we are on track here with this but if there are any other thoughts please feel free to lay em out there! Thanks!:cheers:

Been through 5 speedos on the chopper and 2 on the mutt. firmware update seems to have taken care of both as have had no problems since. i was getting tired of speedo issues especially when u consider they are AUTOMETER!

Can't update the 04's...or atleast the ehc in mine isn't one that can be updated...... and by turning the bike off and restarting with the clutch that would seemingly take the voltage drop out of the equation I would think!

Wrong Answer! :nono::nonod:

"ANY" of the '04s that have the "original" style EHC ( 1 "D" connector and 1 row of LEDs) can be converted to the "newer" style of EHC. The '04 style of EHC is no longer being manufactured. The kit uses an adapter board to make the change possible. :2thumbs:

But I still don't think that is your issue.

Yes you can change the ehc to the new style...... but I didn't think MY ehc thats in my bike could be "Flashed"!!!!! If I have misunderstood this let me know!

Some of the older Autometers suffered from weak connections inside the unit. A couple members here have done threads on pulling the unit apart and finding one of the three wires broken loose. They re-soldered them on and it worked fine. I would check you transmission sensor first to ensure it's good then if you feel like you want to pull the speedo apart do that and inspect the wires.

Ooops, My Bad! :bang:...:loony:...:crazy:

The '04s don't go through the EHC! :nono::nonod:

That didn't start until the '05 EHCs came out. Sorry!

Thanks for the info guys!!!! I will check the sensor first ..... then go into the speedo itself...which I should have a new Dakota sitting there waiting on me when I get back home anyway!!!!! DEAD... just wondering.....is it theEHC that makes the speedo sweep or is it a self test contained within the speedo itself?

Ok so installed the DD Speedo and still nothing. It has power but NO speed while rolling. So how do I check the sending unit to see if it is bad? I pulled it and it had no junk on it. Waved a screwdriver back and forth across it and no MPH on speedo? Help!!!!

If the screwdriver didn't work then I would chase the wires and ensure there is no ground and if that doesn't work then you may need to replace it.
