NO TRANMISSION OIL IN BIKE !

I was performing the service on my Mastiff today following the step by step instructions by Gas man. When it got time to drain the tranny oil I got only about 2 ounces out. I waited for a few minutes cause the instructions said it takes a while to drain, nothing more came out. I then poured trans oil in through the dip stick hole and watched fresh and clean oil come out the drain hole a few seconds later. My question is how much damage do you guys think has been done to the transmission, and what should I look for? I noticed that downshifting had been hard in the past couple days and neutral had been impossible to find so i cleaned and lubed the heim joints and I had not ridden since I did that other than running out today to gas up and warm the bike before the fluid changes.

I would fill it with 20 oz of fluid after riding some miles drain it again and see if you collect any shavings. If not, then just close'er up fill it back up and ride on...

Drain the primary and see if it is in there. I've got a customer that keeps losing tranny fluid into the primary.

You can loose trans fluid into the primary from a bad input shaft seal...most of the time you get that from having worn bearings in the trans.

Mask,

Running the transmission with out oil is obviously never good. But, I have seen transmissions survive short periods with no oil. It is rare though. In most cases, if it is caught quick enough you can get away with just changing out the trans bearings and seals. It is pretty easy to tell if you will need anything else. The gears will blue from the heat. Hopefully yours is one of the rare cases and it continues to treat you well!

thanks for the imput guys I will drain the primary tomorow after work. I went for a ride today and I checked the trans fluid after the bike had cooled, it seemed like the level was low but that might be my imagination cause it is kind of hard to tell with the color of the fluid against the color of the dip stick. I looked underneath the bike and it looked like there was some oil splatter in the area of the final drive belt. I am not completely sure where it was from cause i might have been a little sloppy putting engine oil back in and maybe spilled some. Anyway i will check tomorow and report back for further instructions. And oh by the way my odometer got stuck for about the last 20 or so miles of my ride home. I knew I was going to spend money on the bike after I bought it but I was hoping it was going to be on shiny stuff.

Update : I cleaned off the bottom of the bike, I let it seat for a couple days (easy to do cause of work).I saw no leaks. I took the bike out for about a 30 min ride it shifted well and rode well. I checked the transmission oil after the ride with the bike level and warm. the oil level was between the two marks. I also looked underneath and there was no splatter. I will take it for a longer ride tomorow and do the same checks. Also the speedo crapped out for a few minutes and then came back on along with the odometer. All in all not a bad day. Thanks guys

If the seal on the main shaft goes out, then you will have tranny fluid come into the primary.
Input shaft seal is a double seal to keep in keep out, one goes bad and it can go either way depending on which failed.

I'm sure I probably called it the wrong name. When you pull the clutch basket, it seats into a seal on the transmission. Generally, the fluid in the primary is not as high as the center of the clutch basket (bearing carrier). If the seal that the bearing carrier slides into goes out, fluid will come from the tranny into the primary. Or that's been my experience when i pulled the clutch basket.

I just received the imput seal that i ordered from Baker drivetrain, does any one have step by step instructions on how to replace the seal?

I just drained the oil from the primary and there was a good bit of metal shavings on the drain plug. Also I drained more than a quart from the primary so that confirms where my transmission fluid has been going. Two part question what should I look for with the primary cover off ? I have checked all the bolts and nothing seems loose the chain does not have too much slack. And how do I get to the imput shaft seal which hopefully is the culprit for my tranny oil draining into the primary.

You need to see if you have any movement in the transmission input shaft...Any movement and it has a bearing going bad and needs to be rebuilt or this problem will come back. The shaft will wobble under load and destroy the new seal in some cases and in others it will just let the oil go past one side or the other. Make sure you check it. If you need a rebuild etc let me know and i can help... You may also have the dreaded 4th gear slip that is caused by the bearings going bad.
