Voltage regulator burned up!

Well that's good to know![url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php][/URL] I just assumed that's what was wrong when after I replaced the base gaskets on the cylinders and I assembled everything I put a lot of diletic grease on all the connenctions, the bike would cut out and die, so I cleaned all the connections and it fired right up! I did charge the battery and noticed that when I put my multi=meter on the battery while it was running to see if it was overcharging, when I reved it up the reading was the same, 12.6 volts, before it would go up to 14.5 or so and stop! So maybe what was really happening was just a bad VR and the bike was dieing because of low voltage from the battery and it eventually just burned up![url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php][/URL]

Vibration is one of the causes for the stock VR to go bad. The older VR's with a date before 9/2006 or somewhere around that time were recalled and when BDM was still up. I replaced mine then and never had any problems with the replacement VR. The last couple of years I have been running the Compufire System and all is good. If your interested in a New Stock VR that I purchased from BDM as a spare, let me know. I think $65 bucks shipped is a fair price, let me know.

Nearly burnt my bike to the ground .guy from a local pizza joint ran out with a bottle of water to put mine out.Pics on here somewhere.

That's the wire I noticed that's running along the lower frame rail that just burned up and now the last 2 inches is just bare wire! So will the new VR have a new hot wire that will replace that one? If not, I would think that I should replace the whole thing either way, thanks for that info Bill!

So when I checked the stator resistance I get a reading of 0.4, so if i am doing this correctly, "which I am not sure since my M.M. doesn't have an RX1 scale", it just has a ohms symbol on it so I am assuming that is the correct position, anyway according to this I have a shorted out stator, right?
When I did the test to see if it's grounded I got no reading, does that mean "infinite resistance"? I'm not completely sure.

You're welcome. Glad I could help. You will have to replace the wire. One thing I do is buy a 10' length of clear 1/4" hose to run the wire through and tie wrap it good on the back side of the frame. This will keep it from shorting out.

Hi Guys, I'm not that greatest at electrical and was wondering if there were any recommendations on the installation of a voltage regulator for my 05 Ridgeback. I was gonna order a CE320 VR from Cycle Electric as others have done on the forum but wasn't sure if I could splice the wires or just try and run them along the bottom of the frame. I, can someone explain where the wires are supposed to be connected, like I said I suck at electrical but can wrench. I'm assuming one goes to the battery and am not sure about the other.

1. A 'Magnetic Field' is what we live in, watt we play with is build parts with copper being the best flow of conducting current up a wire say.
2. Say 'Heat' causes molecules to travel up that wire and this is who you fight in the durability of current flow thru a part in the black box and that wire out to the jobber to breakdown someone in that chain.
3. The chemical reaction of heating up its surrounding, think of that connection as in; don't forget that magnetic field is heading for ground to cool off in a rust under the eyelet to frame ground kind of chem reaction [as Tim stated above]. Same chemical reaction is going on at the battery post and that white acid you see accumulate. Same type of magnetic like rust under the eyelet is causing an incomplete circuit to ground(s).

Thus brings out the grease... oh, but special grease too is the marketing sucking you in for a smear of vaseline petroleum jelly. Who boiled the light sweet crude into fuels, paraffin, yada-yada? Take a single edge razor and wipe over the battery's lead posts to become shinny looking. Scrape new metal at the bottom of the cable(s). Smear vaz over the bolt threads, scrapped places, nut... to stop the chemical reaction caused by the other two actions stated above.

Gimme datshit about di-grease not letting current flow. Only on the fucking net.

Well, new VR comes with long wires. Easiest might be to cut original wires next to old vr and just follow the new wire where the old is running now. Except if the old runs under the frame! Tie it to the side of the frame or you will short your new shiny VR when your frame hits the curb for the first time! + wire will go to the breaker or fuse close to the battery and - to battery neg.
