Haven't even been for ride yet as we will have to take jumper leads with us and thats just not right. any how candy just won't start she has a brand new battery and when we try to start her she drains all the power out of battery. she starts fine with a jump start. we are in new zealand and no one knows anything about bigdogs. have managed to start her heaps and take her up the road and back but can't start her up again. any advise from you knowledgable lot would be great.

check out all the wire connections and make sure they are tight, especially the ground. but it also sounds like you could have a short somewhere in the system. pull the tank and check the harness along the backbone.

if all the connections are tight, pull out the volt meter and start checking for outputs on the voltage regulator, the stator, and the battery. just because a battery is "new" doesn't mean it is even worth a shit.

Welcome from Washington State, hope you enjoy the site. Begin with the easy stuff, get the bike started and put a meter on your positive and negative battery terminals while the bike is running. Reading should be in the mid to high 13V DC. If its not make sure your circuit breaker isn't popped or if you have a fuse make sure it's not blown. If the CB and or fuse is good then you need to test your voltage regulator and also your stator. There's test procedures on here if you perform a search. Good luck and hope this helps get you started in the right direction...

Tom is correct about a "new" battery.

Typically the battery is the easiest to test then move on to the outputs on the VR and stator. What is the standing voltage on the battery? (VDC reading with the bike off). Then, what is the loaded voltage of the battery? (VDC reading of the battery with the key on, RUN on, and holding the START button [engine turning over]). And what is the VDC reading while the bike is running?

These three VDC readings will tell quite a bit of important and needed information.

Hi I'm in christchurch and have an 05 mastiff you have to get the biggest battery that will fit your bike I had to do the same and went through a lot of battery's before I got it right. If you want I can send you the details of the battery i now have plus you should think about a trickle charger to keep your battery topped up when the bike is not in use.
