a heads up------ i bought an Interstate battery, label said 320cca. it lasted 2 days. returned for an exchange and the new one lasted 3 days, both left me stranded. before i returned the second one, i peeled the label back and found another label underneath it. Yuasa, 270cca.

Easy solution: take your car or car battery next to bike, while engine NOT RUNNING instal start cables carefully, wait for a minute and push start.. that should start the engine if you have fuel and spark.
I would change the gas first though, that shit has been sitting in the tank for too long time...

I always figure an extra fuel filter is just one more thing to go wrong. And diagnosing a fuel starvation issue under load is always hard.Good point on the fuel I just cleaned the entire fuel system on alicias ironhorse and now the petcock is leaking
I have a fuel filter on my Jeep that cost about $2. It ran fine unless under hard load. Well I replaced ignition module, coil, distributor pickup and a bunch of other shit before I came back to the fuel filter. I assumed since it was only a year old it was fine. In the end I spent about $100 on parts when I only needed $2. I wasn't terribly upset at the time I wasn't sure how old the parts were that I took off anyways. But just goes to show ya that those fuel filters just create a headache. Now in the Jeep case I need to keep it because it has a bypass valve to regulate the Fuel PSI to the carb. Now I change it every oil change and keep a spare one in the Jeep. Only takes a few minutes to swap it out.
For our bikes it's useless. Whatever is in the gas will burn off

I still run a Walmart battery with no problem.
On that note, as others have mentioned....if your battery only cranks the bike 2-3 times until it dies (clicks).....it sounds like you need a new battery......

...it might get burned off... if it goes through the jets in the carb, right? What if it doesn´t? I don´t want my Carb getting shit in there and getting clogged. JMHO.

Quick update, I found a stronger battery Saturday (310 CCA Deka ETX battery) and it started! I also checked the plugs and they were pretty dirty so I changed them out as well and I drained out the old gas. I will keep the battery charged and start/ride more often.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I learned more about my new bike and appreciate the immediate offers of suggestions. I agree, the battery needs to be a really strong CCA one, I may order a better one as I research the ones suggested on this site. M

Yes, absolutely. Another good upgrade when time and money permits is have compression releases installed as it will make starting a bit easier. Without compression releases you are gonna need a great battery.
B2015 from Braille has some of the best ratings you can get for a battery.

Well you can check to make sure you dont have them..they become standard in 2004 models, maybe some 03's had them towards the end I'm not sure. you would see a plastic bubble in the middle of the S&S heads?
Regarding the install I don't know if 2003 heads were predrilled for compression releases of not. Shannon or Jonathan should come along shortly they have 2003 and If I recall both have done the upgrade so they will have more specifics.
