My post is general info for changing a cam. There's NO way that I know that you have a non-EPA engine. If he gave S&S the engine serial # they should be able to give the proper info.
In my business, I don't do things half-assed. I need to check for myself.

If you have a 117 with s&s rocker boxes, and you are sure that they weren't changed from tp boxes, then you have the s&s 546 cam. Specs on that cam are .546 lift, 5 intake opening, 55 intake closing for a 240 intake duration. 52 exhaust open, 5 exhaust close for 237 exhaust duration. 10 degrees of overlap. If you have the TP rocker boxes, then you have the Comp Cams 569. Specs on that are .569 lift, -2 intake open, 48 intake close for 226 intake duration. 52 exhaust open, 8 exhaust close for 240 exhaust duration. 6 degrees of overlap.

If you replace either of those EPA cams with a S&S .585 cam, your cranking compression WILL come up a little giving you a little more torque.

0,0546" more (1,37mm) Lift and 15° more intake duration gives more Gas/ Oxigen into cylinders.
A higher compression, maybe 0,2 to 0,35 bar will give more Power.
Engine valve timing needs to look accurate and calculate a little more time.

How do u Ignition optimation with cam upgrade John?

If you replace the EPA cams with the .600" S&S cam, you'll go backwards with the cranking compression (less than what you have with the EPA cams.) The later the intake valve closes = less cylinder pressure.
Also if you are going to put a .600" lift cam in your engine, you better check to be sure the valve springs can handle the extra lift.

Personally, I'm very happy with the 585. Yeah, I know about shaving the jugs to bump compression so you can use the 600, but I can't imagine that it's WAY more power. Even if it is, I probably wouldn't be able to use it. It's about all I can do to keep a hold of the bike as it is. I have to lay on the tank before I crack the throttle to keep my ass from ending up on the rear fender. Any more power and I would be laying on the pavement!

:agree: 585 is a great cam for our Stock BDM 117.
