Did you just call bigdog and they sent you a new one? I am suprised on how cheap it looks. I just saw one at a shop. The circuit board looks to be exposed. I think it should have all been enclosed in 1 covered package. I think its a bad design again.

It's a totaly sealed multi-layered board. There are not exposed traces, there is a potting compound on the solder points and also to seal around the base of the connectors. The harness is also reinforced with heat shrink for additional support. All that, with the addition of dielectric grease and there is no moisture penetration point. It's not a bad design.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Do you have any info on how the 08 EHC has changed from the 05-07 unit and if it will be upgradeable for us?
Thanks,
Ray

Welcome and great first post.

Can we assume you have some "professional" insight on this?

The 08 EHC is usable on all 2005 models and up. With the adapter board it is now usable on the 2004 models. The biggest change for the mid 07 - 08 EHC is the diagnostic software with the USB cable. The software, if properly used can help diagnose a failure, whether it is an input or internal and clock when the failure occured.

Also, the overall internal workings of it is a much more robust design.

Great info Ohmster, but I don't understand how the 04 models can use the newer harness cause of the two serial plugs vice only one on earlier models.
Am I missing something?

Glad to have you aboard,
Ray

The adapter board converts the two connectors to the one connector with the 5 wires pigtail harness. The 04 did not have alot of the same features as the newer EHC so some of the inputs and outputs were not required. It basically took what the 04 needed and other inputs or outputs just are not used.

Thanks Ohmster. Can I assume that this EHC is bulletproof and will be the cure-all for all my electrical failures on my 04 bulldog? Mine is in the shop now and I need a new EHC bad. Are they free to us good ol boys with expired warrenties?(spelled wrong, i know) since its a factory design flaw? All and any info is greatly appreciated.

The EHC is only one component in the entire system. If you have a failure elsewhere in the system it could mislead someone to believe it's the EHC. However the new EHC does help lead you to where the problem is, be it a chaffed wire for example or any other issue.

As for your other questions, I cannot answer that since it's not my area of expertise.

Ohmster (I like the handle Mr. Electrical) thanks for the insight.

Good to see that there is a fix for the 04's (I have a vested interest and have paid to replace one already). I'm still chasing a iginition gremlin, but want to change the cam sensor before I think about the EHC....plus I like some other poor sucker to try these things out for awhile. Till then I'll just deal with the rare, but annoying, IFF (In Flight Failure)

Call Bigdog, be real nice to them and they will probably replace a bad EHC for free if you take it to a authorized repair shop. Even with no warrentee. They are working with me on it right now. I called them today and they did call me back and have been very helpful. I will let you know how it comes out.

If they see your EHC problems they should be real nice because the new EHC helps in trouble shooting. I want to know what all the lights mean. Working on that now.
Closing in on my 20 K patch

Choppergil;

Yep, I had the same problem a while back - no headlight.

Troubleshot it down to the EHC (a "qualified" BDM dealer should have been able to do the same), swapped out one of the few remaining 2004 EHCs and it's fixed.

Did you have any trouble mounting it? Did it fit into the original holes? Is it smaller?

Thanks!
