Best battery

I think the throttlex is a re-branded Deka just by looking at the terminals. There are only like 3 battery manufactures in the US so not much options.

Also, I get 540 Cranking Amps out of my 1 year old Walmart battery and 450 out of the 3 year old Braille. The Walmart battery typically craps out around year 1 so I wouldnt recommend it even though it puts out more amps. I used to recommend the Walmart one until it religiously craps out right around 12months haha. Although it's cheaper only about $60, think the Deka is still a better value and just replace it every 2 years. I don't know why people hold onto their batteries for too long, just makes for a bad day for a cheap part. Hell for $90 replace it every year and never have to worry! I don't trailer, so I can't chance a battery not worth it

Wal-mart batteries are deka batteries. One in the same. Different sticker.

I just took the bike out for the first time since last year. Been working a lot. I rode 30 miles at about 75 then got into town and cruised around for about 10 more miles lower speed. All of a sudden my Dakota digital went to 00 when riding down the road and would randomly jump around. I parked for a hour or so went back to it and still had the same issues. Had to ride it home and for some reason while cruising around town I looked and noticed I had no taillights. Brakes and turns work though. I’ve done some reading and I’m thinking the speedo may be caused by the battery. And wouldn’t be surprised if the tails are a result as well. I do have a DOC ehc with the added voltage warning light on my gauge but I don’t remember how it worked. I did notice the low oil light would flicker when I turn on or off high beams and hit the horn. If I remember right that was something to do with the ehc voltage warning. I’m thinking back and I don’t think I’ve put a battery in it since I’ve had it. So that makes it over 5 years old. I did check the voltage and with the key off was 12.9 on 12.7 and running 12.8. I’m looking at batteries and looking at the X2 lithium. But
Those Lithium batteries are a bit sensitive with charging current.... hence the need for a special charger...
Makes me worried. I usually keep it on a tender.

I know there’s a lot going on in this post so thought on everything as a whole. Thanks

The running voltage of 12.8 is not good.
Running should be above 13 up to 14.4(max)
Start it up and with it running rev the engine up and you should see the voltage increase and should be 13.8 (charging voltage)
If not, investigate VR and stator setup.

I would definitely pass on the lithium battery. I have Deka batteries in both my dogs. I never use a tender unless the bike sits for a extended length of time. And then only overnight the day before the planned ride. Pretty sure it’s not really good for a battery to be on a tender continuously. FWIW. Cheers to getting that dog running right! :chopper:

I just went to Batteries Plus to get a Duracell (Deka) battery. I found out they are no longer American made Penn Manufacturing batteries. Now they come from China due to the raise in battery costs. What a bummer.....

Just curious as to why Mr. Mickmorris and Mr. Wright, why isn't good to continuously use a battery tender??? I have one for each of my bikes, and when I get home with anyone of them kickstand goes down and battery tender gets hooked up. What harm to the battery, using this method? I assumed the battery tenders all have a "float mode" that stops the charging cycle, once at 100%. Thank in advance, for any information. Never too old to learn something new.

Hey J.J. Hope all is well up your way in Fla. I can’t speak for Mr. Wright on the subject but my personal understanding is that the lithium batteries basically are dangerous to have in anyway overcharged. So a tender should only be used if it’s needed before starting. Technically speaking when a lithium battery is at charge it shouldn’t even drop below its max charge. I use these on my R/C Jet boat and they can explode if over charged. Very dangerous. Now I use Deka in my bikes and I believe they hold a charge very well and should only need the tender to top them off after sitting for an extended period. I ride both bikes weekly so no need for the tender. This is of course just my personal opinion on the subject. I have a couple of battery tenders that rarely get used. But they are there when needed. Hope this explains my take on the deal! :chopper:

My take. I was in the fire service in South Florida for 32 years. In that time, I responded to 2 structure fires, that I know of, (there may have been more, but I didn't take the report)) started by vehicles hooked up to trickle chargers. I know a ton of people who use them 24/7 with NO issues. It's just a thing with me. I only use mine when I'm close to it.

One reason is what John mentioned, The other is just many years of research. The batteries just seem to last longer when not on the charger all the time. If I ride each weekend I don't even bother to top off the battery. But if it's been a couple weeks, I'll throwing it on the charger for 30 minutes or so. Just so it not so hard on the starter.

Gentlemen. Thank you for the replies. I don't use "lithium" batteries" in any of my bikes. These days there aren't anymore "kickers" on bikes, so I always just thought that having a "topped off" battery was to my benefit when leaving the house. Now you've got me thinking about a fire. Oh Crap... No bragging, I do own five bikes, and I do have my favorites, so there are times when a couple of them will just sit...Thanks again. JJ
