Documenting the rebuild of my Pro Sport 107 - motor, exhaust, etc and some WTFs

Ok Guys! Finally a good update. I now have almost 100 miles on the bike and everything is solid. I have posted a few pics below, sorry they are just phone pics I'll get some good ones sometime soon. And I'll post some vid of the pipe sound once it is broken in a bit more and I can get on it.

Only two issues:
1. puking some oil out of head breathers after a ride. not sumping, no puking after sitting, just after a ride of say 10 miles at mellow rpm I get about 3-4 tablespoons of oil (i'm catching it in a can). no oil out of crankcase breather. hoping this goes away after break in and change to different oil. You'll see in the pics the "catch can" I have mounted by the rear brake master cylinder on the frame tube, with the head breather going into it. please don't laugh..;p

2. compression releases keep slamming shut when trying to start bike. baby has some compression! I have to manually hold down the rear compression release until bike fires up, otherwise it will not turn over.

Overall though- all good for now!! New bars (black) and new polished billet DNA risers. And yes the tach on the bars is a bit goofy but I need it for break in.

Parked bike in Beverly Hills roadside for a few quick pics...

Tommy- gonna go for a nice long ride on Sunday. unfortunately have to work all day during the week. how else am i gonna pay for bike parts? lol

Brew thanks. came out pretty decent for an old Pro Sport.

La that bike looks great you did some real good work !what gage is attached to your bars? IMHO it looks off I think the bike would look better without it. But your bike looks great and flows

It is a Baron 3" mini tach. I need it for breaking in the bike so it's only temporary. yep it looks better without it.

Shit just read your full post guess u think so too with the gage on the bars,Your issues could be you overfilled the oil causing it to blow by or gasket leak. Check oil levels and all breather gaskets you may also want to check your breather setup

thanks- yeh i'm totally familiar with oil level on this scoot - i got it at a hair under 2 1/2 qts. When i first got bike it (before issues and rebuild) used to pee oil out the breathers if i put in more than 2 1/2. I did put on an S&S HVHP pump and I'm running cheap 20/50 oil for break in, so it could be the oil is foaming up and making it's way out. after another oil change on Sunday I'll switch to a better oil and see what's up. breather setup is good, it is on timing. new umbrella valves and Jims breather gear.

Frank- RB Racing LSR 2-1 for FXR. It was a tight fit, just cleared the 6 speed tranny clutch side cover by a hair- and that was after slightly tweaking it. Really nice fit and finish on this pipe, it is "jewelry quality" on manufacture and chrome. And it sounds good, i can't wait to hear it bark once I can crank the revvs.

Alllrrright guys... I wish I could continue to post good news, but unfortunately no go. Sunday took a ride up the coast to Neptune's Net / Ventura county line. Day started out funky as I could not get spark and battery was weak, so I told my boys I couldn't meet up and to head out without me. Well ok 15 min later everyone rolls over to my house to try and help out- you gotta love 'em :D.

Front coil wire was loose. mechanic used too long a bolt on the tap so even though bolt was tight the wire lug was loose. And, the "new" alternator case plug was installed pushed too far in, the pins in it were squashed, and the plug won't stay on. So essentially I've been riding for the past 2 weeks strictly on battery power. I've kept the bike on the trickle charger so that's why I never noticed. anyway I got everything fixed, and we rode off. Bike runs strong, had a good ride, got home and went to do an oil change. Had about a full redbull can of oil pumped out the top breather after a 75 mile ride (redbull can is my catch can).

Oil in crank case looks good, no sumping. Oil from tank looks good. Oil filter - however - had big chunkies of metal and a couple of metal shaving curlies all over outside of filter and inside filter housing. So something again is fucked up. The 1st oil change at 50 miles was perfect. 120 miles later this oil change shows damage.

So I got three choices. take motor somewhere else and drop a few grand getting it built **again** for the goddamn third time, and hope the next place knows what the hell they are doing, or buy a whole new motor, or just sell this thing and get another bike. Sucks cause I love the way the bike rides and handles- I was hooking corners on this thing like a sport bike and it is very stable at speed.

This really pains me because I am a hands-on guy with projects, and whenever I do something myself I always make sure it comes out right. it seems like anytime I let someone else fix something it is fucked. But I don't have time, tools or master-level knowledge on motor building so I have to rely on someone to know their shit, do a good job, and actually take some pride in what they do.

I've tried working with the best places I could find, and it has ranged from "rejected" (e.g. don't bother us with your edelbrock / TP / SS evo motor), to flake / incompetence (Branch Okeefe), to bugging places that finally did the work to actually get it done. I kinda feel like the place that did the work on my motor was getting sick of it and this last build was rushed out because it was holding up other bikes getting done, especially when I see shit like the coil terminal and alternator plug. Plus other stuff like I asked what the compression was on the new build and they couldn't tell me, I had to do all of the cam / compression / quench math, etc. - I left a message with them about the metal pieces and no call back / nada.

If I can find a good deal on a new motor that may be the most cost effective route at this point, but of course I gotta actually find a motor & decent place to install it, and again hope they know what they are doing- Really frustrating ordeal guys- All I wanna do is ride.

--Sorry for the "vent" but I'm about reaching limits of patience (and bank account).

Man that is unbelievable. And I thought I had bad luck  I would take it back and let them make it right. Any decent shop would warranty there work.

nah that ain't gonna be a good option. they're gonna say it was fine when left shop and prolly blame it on me for not riding it right. plus if it was not built successfully the first two times, why would third be any different?

RETIRED
I would opt for a different motor, or beg John Sachs to build it for me. Until you shake the bad voodoo, I'm glad you're on the other coast. I hope it gets better for you.
