I have a 2000 bigdog bulldog need to remove tank liner has any one done this before and what did they use to remove the liner plus what they use to plug the gas cap hole to keep chemical from getting on paint

Fuel Tank Liner Removal

Does anyone know of a best practice to achieve removing the liner inside my tanks? I'm wondering if it is possible to completely remove it. I recently removed the tanks to have them repainted and since they have sat without any fuel and been through a paint bake cycle, the liner is flaking off...

Have you ever tried flushing your gas tank and cleaning the pet cock before you have to remove your tank liner? Unless you know you must remove the tank liner. I flushed mine and put on a new pet cock 6 years ago.

Remember, anything strong enough to remove the liner, will remove the paint on the out side. Luckily, all the ones I've done, were going to be painted afterwards. Do a search on here, there is a thread that mentions the name of a company that does it professedly

When I did mine I covered it with stretch film;

Use rubber caps with hose clamps for the fuel line fittings.
Use pipe cleaners to plug the fuel line tubes and vent tube before pouring in the new liner.
I was careful and didn't have any paint issues.

Look at plumbing stuff. I know they make rubber plugs for different size pipes that expand to stop water under pressure so I’m sure it would work for that. Should be something along those lines that will work

Shot in the dark but try a craft store. Hobby Lobby type places. They may have some larger sized rubber/cork plugs? Or shove a rag in the hole and tape the heck outta the fill hole? Id have the entire tank taped if I wasnt gonna repaint.

I had one i taped off and then painted over that with liquid mask .. Filled tank with acetone. Well some seeped out of pitcock and the paper masking tape wicked it up... Damaged some paint on lower edge of tank .
Bummer .. Further pain was acetone didn't touch the liner .. it set for two days

I'd send it out .. lot cheaper then new paint.

A couple well respected people on this forum suggested not trying what I did. And to just run it and flush as needed.. Poblem i was having was bad liner and a pin hole leak in one of the tank mount pockets. And the liner kit i purchased claimed it would bridge such issues and solve the leak. I had tried sealers, epoxy etc.

The several I have done, was to take the tank to a radiator repair shop. Most of them have the means to do anything to the tank, without hurting paint, etc.

Ugh, I need to do this to mine too. Last time I fooled with the bike, like 2 years ago, something in the tank (probably a tiny chunk of liner) made it past the petcock filter and down into my carb and jammed up one of my jets. After that, it sat a little longer and was transported to my parent's house to sleep for a while and now it's here at my house where I can tinker with it. It's probably been sitting 2 years almost since it ran last with little to no fuel in the tank, so I know it needs a good cleaning and lining.
